Hank Aaron Would Have Faced Worse Racism Today
Time ^ | April 7, 2014 | Jon Friedman

Posted on 04/07/2014 12:51:15 PM PDT by EveningStar

The home-run king is lucky he didn't have to contend with the ubiquitous bigots and haters on today's social media ...

We might conclude that Aaron got off easy four decades ago, long before social media dominated every facet of our lives and removed any shred of privacy.

Just try to imagine how much more intense and challenging his predicament would have been. Can you picture the potential for incessant racist taunts on Facebook and Twitter, not to mention the blogosphere? In the 1970s, the haters reached Aaron by what we call “snail mail.” Today, in our sped-up-world of modern communications, Aaron would have had no escape...

Can someone refresh my memory? Was Hank Aaron the target of racists when he broke Babe Ruth’s all time home run record?

This is just bullshit.

Why pollute this forum with it?

I guess it does serve a purpose to display what warped people might be thinking, or lack thereof.

Yes, he had death threats leading up to the record...I saw an interview with him back in the 90s, he was scared silly after he hit 715 beacuse as he rounded second and the Atlanta fan raced onto the field...he wasn’t sure if the fan was friend or foe...

I don’t know if it would be worse racism, by and large I think there’s fewer racists in this country. But thanks to social media a very small number of people can make a very large amount of noise.

I can believe it.
Racism in recent decades is a tool that has been gaining momentum as the left wields it in their agenda to divide people. (Just as they use gender, sexual orientation, income, etc., to divide the people.)
Race pimps like the Rev Al and Jesse Jackass are only bit players getting filthy rich in the process.
You see Obama and Holder fan the flames of racism at every opportunity.

This child was probably not even alive when Milo Hamilton called 715. He also probably never witnessed the Civil Rights movement and only has knowledge from the propaganda he was spoon fed by his communist educators.

Haters? Who are these “haters”? Is it the soft prejudice that is the driving force of “low expectations”? Is it the implied belief in inferiority that is behind “Affirmative Action”?

The old-fashioned belief that one can, by sheer strength of will, overcome what some may see as “limitations”, and expand far beyond “expectations”, is an ingrained article of faith with those of us who believe in the innate dignity of every human being, and the transcendence that shows through commitment to faith in that which cannot be seen, or to the inner voice that speaks to the individual alone.

The sports fans I hung out with (mostly white) didn’t have a problem with it. Most people want to see records set in their lifetime. (except when you are juicing to do it). I didn’t know Aaron, but I never saw any negative associated with him. Maris may have had tougher time when he passed Ruth’s 60.

Number 715

I remember that. Hear the thousands of white bigots shouting the N word.. and at the end of this short video two whites rush from the stands and attack Aaron as he heads for home plate.

Hint: must be wearing your liberal / progressive hat to actually see it that way.

I call B.S. on this idiocy. Barry Bonds broke several big home run records, and I don't recall a single racial angle to any stories at the time. He took a lot of heat, but that was mainly because of the PED issue ... and because he was just a plain old @sshole.

If Hank Aaron was chasing Babe Ruth's record in today's age of computer databases and baseball sabermetrics, I think a lot more attention would be paid to the peculiar career Aaron had as a baseball star. He held the career home run record for a long time, but he was never really much of a "slugger" in the traditional sense of the word. In his best season he hit only 47 home runs, and I believe he only won three HR titles in his long career.

Aaron was a line-drive hitter with strong wrists who hit a lot of home runs because happened to play most of his career in small ballparks. Oddly enough, his home run record has overshadowed the fact that he was a magnificent all-around hitter. He's still #3 on the all-time list with 3,771, and he has a higher career batting average than Pete Rose (who has very little to his credit beyond his records as a singles hitter).

And here's what I consider to be one of the most amazing baseball numbers of all time: Hank Aaron would still be a member of the 3,000-hit club even if you took his 755 career home runs out of his hit total!

B.S.!

This nation accepted BARRY BONDS....a juicing, cheating, cocky, arrogant, obnoxious, two-faced jerk as Home Run King, and did so rather graciously. And he is as black as anyone on the planet.

Hank Aaron is a saint compared to this guy. America would embrace him whole-heartedly if he set the record today.

No, you are wrong. Just shut up and get away from the keyboard and listen to the liberal progressive message.

All white people are bad... only white people hate other races... white people hate black people... white people attack and kill black people... black people never do anything wrong... black people are never racist.

Now, the good people at Time and other pussyfied news outlets have told you this over and over so get with the program.

Racist.

yeah, it was pretty ugly. Just a decade earlier, it wasn’t too pretty for Maris when he was chasing Ruth’s 60 (though Mantle would have been acceptable to most). Throw in a black guy and things got even worse for Hammerin’ Hank. But to pretend it would be a problem now is just ludicrous. Hell, people don’t even acknowledge Bonds “passing” Aaron, because Aaron’s record has people’s respect. That alone should be proof enough this theory is crap. Yeah - people really hated Henderson when he beat out Cobb. Hell, people hated Cobb for being racist pr!ck. THis writer needs someone to explain baseball history to him.

When Maris was challenging Ruth’s record, virtually every old-timer was against him. Many said that he couldn’t have played in Ruth’s days. But of course they said that about all the modern players at the time.
