The future of public transport? Map reveals how the entire WORLD could be connected
The Daily Mail ^ | 7 April 2014 | SARAH GRIFFITHS

Some train journeys feel like they take forever -

especially when there are numerous transfers and waits in between flights and trains. But what if you could board a train in Madras, India and travel to Boston with no changes?

One man has imagined the world as a giant London Underground map where people can travel freely between countries and traverse vast bodies of water from the comfort of their seat while vehicles speed through vast tunnels.

While his dream is currently ‘impossible’, engineers are constantly trying to develop new ways to connect countries.

Sounds like fun! I’ll ride it after they find a solution for the Muslim problem. Spend a trillion dollars, only to have some inbred jihadist make a mess.

Wow! How visionary!

But they're not thinking outside the box. They should go through the center of the earth or use tesseracts.

Standing tough under stars and stripes We can tell
This dream's in sight
You've got to admit it
At this point in time that it's clear
The future looks bright
On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from new york to paris
Well by seventy-six we'll be a.o.k.

What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free

Get your ticket to that wheel in space
While there's time
The fix is in
You'll be a witness to that game of chance in the sky
You know we've got to win
Here at home we'll play in the city
Powered by the sun
Perfect weather for a streamlined world
There'll be spandex jackets one for everyone

What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free

On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
(more leisure for artists everywhere)
A just machine to make big decisions
Programmed by fellows with compassion and vision
We'll be clean when their work is done
We'll be eternally free yes and eternally young

What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free

Steely Dan

What was it Niven and Pournelle used in the Ringworld series? Transfer plates?

That's what we need. Just don't put them in your house. Someone drunk dialing could teleport in.

Big deal, the guy can draw an underground map.

The guy has a bias for pretty 45 degree angles and perfectly radiused round corners that caused him to miss entire sections of the United States, but he still needed to rearrange geography fairly heavily to accomplish even that. He also hopscotched across every single little island in the Caribbean, but needed to take liberties with location there, too. Looks like Appalachia is the place to be on the east coast, lol, not a single city there, not even Knoxville, Asheville or the entire state of West Virginia.

The wealthy voters in my county (Marin) near San Francisco, would never allow it. They are proudly protective of their presumed exclusivity. Come back twenty years from now, their grandchildren may feel differently. For now, no Bart Train and no Smart Train either.

Here's a revolutionary idea . . . build a working “transporter” like they've used on all the Star Trek programs and movies. Instantaneous transport to anywhere on the planet certainly beats the train.

This provokes the observation: Why do “progressives” think a 19th century mode of transport, railroads, are cutting edge 21st century technology? Why not teleportation or Mach 5 travel in an exoatmospheric aircraft for the 21st century?

They’ll get this system built after trillions of dollars are spent and then someone will have perfected the star trek transporter.
