Optimists hoped Obama would usher in a new age of racial harmony. Pessimists feared a surge in racial strife. Neither was right. But what happened instead has been even more invidious.
A few weeks ago, the liberal comedian Bill Maher and conservative strategist and pundit Bill Kristol had a brief spat on Mahers HBO show, putatively over what instigated the tea party but ultimately over the psychic wound that has divided red America and blue America in the Obama years. The rise of the tea party, explained Maher in a lets-get-real moment, closing his eyes for a second the way one does when saying something everybody knows but nobody wants to say, was about a black president. Both Maher and Kristol carry themselves with a weary cynicism that allows them to jovially spar with ideological rivals, but all of a sudden they both grew earnest and angry. Kristol interjected, shouting, Thats bullsh*t! That is total bullsh*t! After momentarily sputtering, Kristol recovered his calm, but his rare indignation remained, and there was no trace of the smirk he usually wears to distance himself slightly from his talking points. He almost pleaded to Maher, Even you dont believe that!
I totally believe that, Maher responded, which is no doubt true, because every Obama supporter believes deep down, or sometimes right on the surface, that the furious opposition marshaled against the first black president is a reaction to his race. Likewise, every Obama opponent believes with equal fervor that this is not only false but a smear concocted willfully to silence them....

Race, always the deepest and most volatile fault line in American history, has now become the primal grievance in our politicsSeven pages of this, really?
Yes, enjoy it.
And if we were talking about President Clarence Thomas, Mr. Maher?
From what was posted both guys are fools that have been cornered by Obama’s dark skin. Obama is not a ‘black’ man like he and other dupes would have people believe but instead is a man of colure, quite common to SE Asian people and even some other places of the world that have dark skinned people. People need to know about the relationship of his mother Stanley Ann with both Indonesians and Africans as well as grandma’s and grandpa’s communist ties that lead to Valerie Jarette. There is a real story to be told.
The first page was sort of sane but then the article rapidly veered into total weirdness. The author, Jonathan Chait, believes that if you are for small government and for balancing the budget you are a racist. And he cites a bunch of articles by far-left academics and news reports by far-left outfits like NPR which try to prove.
Could this possibly be the prevalent view by most Democrats?? If so, man are we in deep doodoo.
A lot of us out here in flyover country happened to look at Obama's character and we found it unworthy of the American presidency.
It had nothing to do with the color of his skin.
In fact, technically he is half white.
Criminals come in all shades.
Tea Party support for every black conservative so far has been deep, visceral and spontaneous; only by ignoring that can skunks like Maher continue to spread their slander.
” Obama is not a black man like he and other dupes would have people believe but instead is a man of colure, quite common to SE Asian people.”

You can not judge based on skin Color. SE Asians are not negroid. Obama’s father was an African negro, as well as a radical Marxist.
Convoluted analysis of something quite simple - i.e., 1. Obama has ushered in an extended age of tyrannical and extra-constitutional socialism that will take forever to undo, if it is, in fact, ever undone; and, 2. Obama has set race relations in the United States back a good fifty years.
Obama and his lying slimy gang despoiling the White House are totally corrupt ef’ing Chicago thieves. Indicate to me where that description demonstrates any racial bias.
You sir are spot-on.
I will need validated proof that Obama’s sperm father was a negro let alone an African. I agree skin color does not establish racial certainty. I am a dark skinned person with European ancestry and as a boy and even in WWII was taken as a ‘black’ person especially under copious sunshine usually taken as a ‘tan’.
“I will need validated proof that Obamas sperm father was a negro let alone an African.”

Are you implying that Barack Sr. was not a Kenyan Negro?
That would be an interesting twist.
Only HE and the Leftists have ever made it about race. Its always been about his character, policies, performance, and ability to deal with crises which he doesn’t appear to deal with too well.
Much, much worse than that. Around the time you are talking about, the black middle class, built around healthy families, was first seeing their dreams translated into reality. In my high school for example, there was little racial distinction; you could date without that being a factor. A growing number of black professionals promised an even brighter future.
The Democratic Party's grip on the budget over the decades since has finally accomplished the despicable original plans of the Democratic Party for black people. Let's just say that was more than fifty years ago.
I’m tempted to tl;dr the whole mess, but now I’m curious to see if this has any mention of MLK’s “content of their character” quote.
And deep doo-doo it is. Democrats really DO believe that small government and balanced budgets wreak grievous harm upon blacks and minorities. In their eyes, this leaves no room for redress of those ills visited upon the persons of lesser attainment and indifferent capabilities. Therefore, we NEED the soft prejudice of lowered expectations and the inherent racism of affirmative action. And the classes of victims must be expanded to cover any group that finds itself in the least “ostracized”, or for whom the degree of “non-participation” in some field or endeavor is not proportional to their (real or imagined) percentage of the total population, therefore assuring “equality”.
