Haley Barbour: Jeb Bush stance like Reagan’s
Politico ^ | 4/8/14 | UCY MCCALMONT

Former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour defended Jeb Bush’s recent comments that some illegal immigration is an “act of love,” saying it’s very similar to what former President Ronald Reagan thought.

“What people want you to do: Tell the truth,” Barbour said Tuesday at the LBJ Presidential Library’s Civil Rights Summit. “And if Jeb feels that way about it — it sort of reminds me of my boss, Ronald Reagan.”

Barbour, who was an aide in Reagan’s administration described what the president used to call the “gates test” during a panel Tuesday with Democratic San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro.

“Ronald Reagan used to say, ‘When the ‘Blame America first’ crowd gets out of hand, then you need to apply the gates test,’” Barbour said.

The former governor recalled asking what Reagan meant by the gates test and said his reply was: “’The gates test: Drop all the gates everywhere in the world and see which way people run. They run to America.’”

“And that’s what Jeb is saying to me, that this is the place, for good reason,” Barbour said. “And we ought to be proud of it, that when you apply the gates test, that people want to come here.”

“That message has the benefit of being true,” Barbour added. “Whether everybody will take that same tact, that’s neither here nor there. But it’s very similar to what Ronald Reagan thought.”

In order to sign the amnesty Reagan got a promise that our borders would be enforced afterwards. He would not have signed the bill w/o that assurance.

However, as always with the Dims; they did not bargain in good faith. They got what they wanted and didn’t follow through with enforcement of the border.

Those who fail to learn the lessons of history...

I,for one, don't believe most of today's immigrants are coming here because they love America and want to assimilate.

Why the GOP somehow has the idea it’s going to win in 2016... especially trotting out the likes of Jebby and Krispie Kreme, is beyond me. Worry about winnable seats in statehouses and the Congress. The lo-fos are slobbering over themselves to vote for Killery.

Oh, they have assimilation on their minds... of America's territory into Mexico.

If Jeb Bush believes that illegal aliens invade the US out of love for family, it won’t be long before he claims that Jihadis come here out of love for Islam.

It always chokes me up when politicians talk about love as they ruin this country.

Haley, put down the crack pipe. The Bushes hated Reagan. they are nothing but elitist that want to keep this country
in their corrupt hands.

Eisenhower tried enforcement and deportation. Reagan tried amnesty. How about we try the one that worked?

The former governor recalled asking what Reagan meant by the gates test and said his reply was: “’The gates test: Drop all the gates everywhere in the world and see which way people run. They run to America.’”

Which means we should be able to require people to come in legally, and enforce it.

This is nothing like Jeb's position or that of the Ruling Class.

I think they have reached a point where they are desperate enough or confident enough to go for broke. I think they are confident.

That they were able to get most conservatives to vote for Willard, and able to crush most threatening conservatives since 2010 has emboldened them.

I agree on this. The GOP leadership are just waiting for an enforcement fig leaf from the kenyan. Amnesty is coming after the midterms if they can get that. Boehner appears to want only one more rodeo and is very dangerous.

Exactly. And ignoring that makes Barbour a stinking liar.

Half truth is worse than a lie.

Haley, along with all the good-ol’-boy, Republican country clubbers, is going to help his buddy Jeb commit political suicide. Keep up the good work! There is nothing like a yucky, sweet dialog on amnesty to rile up and p!$soff voters while losing an election. We can only hope that in this instance the loss will come in the primaries. That’s the place to cull out the dummies.

Reagan was fooled:
Under the new law, employers who hire illegal aliens will be subject to civil penalties of $250 to $10,000 for each such alien. Mr. Reagan described this provision as ''the keystone'' of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. ''It will remove the incentive for illegal immigration by eliminating the job opportunities which draw illegal aliens here,'' he said.
And a statement from Schumer at the time:
''The bill is a gamble, a riverboat gamble. There is no guarantee that employer sanctions will work or that amnesty will work. We are headed into uncharted waters.''
In other words, they had to pass it to find out what's in it.
