What Happens When American Teenagers Can't Find Work
National Journal ^ | April 9, 2014 | Nancy Cook

Posted on 04/09/2014 12:32:34 PM PDT by C19fan

Most Americans love to reminisce about their first paying job, whether it was scooping ice cream, babysitting, or working behind a retail counter. It was rarely glamorous, but earning that first paycheck was a point of pride and marked a milestone in a teenager's life.

By the time Andrew Sum entered his teenage years, he'd already held a job delivering newspapers. Now as an economist, one of his chief concerns is the state of the labor market for today's teenagers. The employment rates for teenagers, ages 16 to 19, plummeted from 45 percent in 2000 to just 26 percent in 2011, according to Sum's recent research for the Brookings Institution. That's the lowest rate of teen employment in the post-World War II era.

The silence of the article on the major role of immigration has played in this decline in teens working is deafening.

Agreed. Anecdotal evidence is that many people working in retail, or places such as fast food outlets, were not born in this country.

When I was a teenager I helped my dad on the farm, I had a small herd of sheep, a couple of steers, help with the haying, and stacking, milked cows and then I earned money helping the neighbors. Now days I guess they play video games or get into gangs creating trouble.

Print print print. The Counterfeiter-In-Chief will tax via inflation to feed his peeps and bankrupt a nation.

Criminal, illegal “immigration”. That, and the hoards of islamist that has been allowed to come here and sponge off Uncle Sugar and build sharia law villages in America.

Destructive, criminal invaders is more accurate.

When I go to major tourists destinations during peak times one can’t help see all the foreigners instead of Americans staffing the places. I was out at Yellowstone a few summers ago and it looked like little Romania with all the Eastern Europeans working in the area.

“then I earned money helping the neighbors.”

If you hire a kid for cash to help you and he gets hurt you’ll be sued for everything you own. When he wins that the state will step in and charge you with labor law violations. You can lose everything you have by hiring somebody with no insurance. (That’s the law around here.)

It's silent on immigration and it's silent on off-shoring.

Raise the import tariffs and bring back American industry to boost the demand for labor.

Stop illegal immigration, reduce legal immigration and H1b's to reduce the supply of labor.

Government policies have led to this, and are making it worse.

Every job I did as a teen is now done by adults or illegals.

Delivering newspapers, working in my friend’s -fathers parking lot, clean-up at a meat processing plant...

I’m convinced our Government and the Federal Reserve are destroying work, and killing the job market.

It is a planned take over. Look how sects have taken over certain industries: hotels, restaurants, convenience stores etc...

When I was a kid, I harvested radishes and green oninons by hand in Auburn Washington. The people there were young people like me and a few of their single moms. When I turned 16 I drove the goods on a flatbed truck to places like the Safeway distribution center.

Every single person was white. No blacks (none in that area at that time), no hispanics, but quite a few Asians, believe it or not.

Now, most of those farms are gone. Replaced by warehouses and business centers.

A side note: Every single one of my Asian friends there were Japanese and all of their fathers were named George. This was around 1970.

Obama wants to come to the rescue by raising the minimum wage.

As long as they can buy an Arizona Tea and a bag of Skittles with an EBT and some Cough Medicine through Obamacare, they will be good!

Raise the minimum wage higher and we’ll all find out.
