After marathon House debate, school-bullying bill goes to Dayton

After nearly 12 hours of impassioned objections by Republicans, the DFL-controlled House sent an overhaul of Minnesota's bullying-prevention law to Gov. Mark Dayton early Wednesday morning.

GOP lawmakers acknowledged from the start of the debate at 1 p.m. Tuesday that House DFLers had the votes to pass the Safe and Supportive Minnesota Schools Act, but they objected to the measure right up until the vote, shortly before 12:30 a.m.

The bill prevailed on a 69-63 vote, mostly along party lines.

The bill passed the Senate last week with a 36-31 vote with all Republicans and three DFLers voting against it.

Minnesota's current anti-bullying law is 37 words. The bill requires school leaders to develop a comprehensive anti-bullying policy, train staff to prevent bullying and quickly investigate allegations.

Article by: KATHERINE KERSTEN Updated: February 26, 2014

This top-down, statewide measure stems from political correctness — not protection.

the first person to be charged will be a 6 year old kindergartner who tells one of his classmates that his father said if you don’t believe in Jesus you will go to hell.
mark my words.

I had a discussion with my wife not more than an hour ago about bullying. It was with respect to the knife wielding kid in PA that stabbed and slashed 20 people in school today. She was positive that bullying will be brought into the story, as in, the perp was bullied. It is time that kids can beat the crap out of each other without having a criminal record or kids going on a killing rampages. Just like the old days. It is also time for men in schools, teachers, administrators, janitors and hired help to have the guts to step in when fights are unequal ... e.g., bullies getting the crap beat out of them. That is written from the perspective of a kid (me) that snapped in junior high school and beat the shit out of a bully twice my size.

I gained a reputation the day that I did that, and haven't laid a hand on anyone since.

This is just more ‘zero tolerance’ with zero common sense.

The langauge of the actual bill in in the story too- most of it is mumbojumbo educrat speak.

Educrat speak = Marxist/Fascist government. We know both have failed in the past.

I have no doubt this will grow. They will eventually deem Christians to be bullies because they’re picking on the poor, helpless homosexuals, and then they will prosecute the Christians....and then it really begins....

You beat ONE bully not a hallful of random students... not quite the same.

I see this as just another way leftists can get normal people to take their kids out of schools so schools can still collect the same money and get the ‘smaller class sizes’ the teachers claim are the panacea to all their woes.

fill me in on this ... did this kid that stabbed and slashed get bullied by a hall full of students? I may sound like I am on the wrong side of this, particularly if the perp was a bully. All I am saying is forget the anti-bullying bullshit and let boys learn to stand up for themselves. The bullies will back down. At the moment kids that get bullied have no way to fight back other than trusting liberal teachers ... which should never been trusted. A bully is actually a very weak person that relies on threat of physical violence to be strong. Strong people use physical violence as a last resort and become stronger in a good manner.

Also dads could teach timid boys how to fight. If they know their dads are rooting for them, the timid boys might not be so timid any more.

This bill doesn’t require parental notification from the school.(about the bullied kid or the bullier)

Dad might never know.

Dad needs to stay close to his boy (which is a greater moral virtue anyhow). Some dads treat their sons as half pestilence. Don’t bother me kid, I’m busy watching the ballgame or whatever. “Cat’s in the Cradle” is a song about one of the less tragic outcomes of such estrangement. Worse is very possible.

$23k per kid to ‘educate’ kids in MPLS and 64% of it going to non-educational matters.

And every year they want more.
