Exercise, and not colorful marshmallow Peeps, will be the focus of the 136th Annual White House Easter Egg Roll on April 21, the sixth year in a row that first lady Michelle Obama's fitness-first goal for kids has taken over the once sugar-filled event on the South Lawn.
The day's activities will encourage children to lead healthy, active lives in support of the first lady's Let's Move! initiative, said the White House of their sixth roll, titled Hop into Healthy, Swing into Shape.
In the past, administrations have given differing themes for the annual Easter Egg Roll. Former President George W. Bush, for example, used his 2007 event to promote physical fitness, but other years were themed for volunteering, the environment and other educational issues.
The Obamas, however have turned all of theirs over to fitness, one of the first ladys chief passions. She officially made it a top agenda item in 2010 when she kicked off Lets Move! Over those years, government reports have indicated that childhood obesity has dropped and supporters have given the first lady some of the credit for focusing on fitness and healthy diet.
Past Obama Easter Egg Roll themes:
2013: Be Healthy, Be Active, Be You!
2012: Let's Go, Let's Play, Let's Move
2011: Get Up and Go!
2010: Ready, Set, Go!
2009: Let's Go Play
America’s fat assed personal trainer.
This year, instead of fatty eggs, the Ms. Obama is going to substitute them with colored lemons and turnips for the hunt. But the spring Holiday bunny will still be on hand for the festivities.
like giving raisins on Halloween, nothing like sucking all the fun out of it
The WH Diva gives prunes a bad name.
I can’t believe they actually used the word “Easter”
I’m surprised she didn’t try to hijack “Let’s Roll!” away from the Flight 93 passengers, by, instead, referring to an instruction about what to do with the eggs.
What passes for "school lunch" cannot be considered as edible.
NO more chocolate or strawberry milk, thanks to MOO-chelle -- so 80% of the white Milk goes straight into the trash (kids bring "Monster" and "Rock Star" from the local roach coach) - along with the rest of the vile slop passed off as "food." The smell is horrendous; school food is NOT allowed in my classroom.
Ready, steady, Go COMMUNIST!!!!!
2014 theme: Let’s Sign Up For Obamacare!
Let’s Move? I wish she would and take her family and fellow travelers with her. I don’t care where they move to - as long as its as far from the United States as they can get.
That food in the bottom picture looks like what they were spooning out in a show I watched recently on Russia’s toughest prisons. Inedible looking, but one of the inmates was a cannibal.
From your pictures, I’m trying to figure out how the slop currently passed off as “school lunch” in 2014 differs from the “mystery meat” and mashed potatoes with Elmer’s Glue Gravy lunches that we got back in the 1970s.
Aside from the more “environmentally-friendly” packaging nowadays, there’s not much difference.
MOO-chelle is a hypocrite — among other things.
My mother made 3 of us bologna and cheese sandwiches for lunch EVERY SINGLE DAY, we also got a bag of potato chips and a chocolate chip cookie.
All of us were honors students, college graduates and are successful.
What’s so tragic is so much food was being tossed out that an enterprising kid at one of our schools decided that he would start up a program to give the unwanted food to the homeless or to a food bank.. NOPE.
Turns out the GOVERNMENT demanded that the food be inspected before it went to the homeless! So back into the trash it went - unopened containers, fruit, milk that was never touched — all of it, and that’s where it goes to this day.
Read a report last week that said that $100,000 worth of food goes into the trash EACH DAY in my district, adding up to millions of dollars each year— of course, the media NEVER report any of this but I see it with my own eyes each and every day.
Sigh. What the public doesn’t know about what goes on behind school doors.
IMO, the SAME exact food that is served to school children should be served at the White House to the president’s family.
