Vandals flip Smart cars on streets of San Francisco
CNN ^

(CNN) -- Smart cars are good for the environment, good for parking in cramped cities and good for a driver's bottom line. Then again, all that thinking gets turned upside down when the vehicles do. That's what happened to four of these fuel-efficient vehicles in San Francisco, tossed aside like a piece of trash. Why? Authorities don't know, leaving Bay Area residents to speculate that anything from pranksters to people upset about hipsters. All Brandon Michael knows is what he saw -- a group of men, in the dark of night, walking up to one Smart car. "(They) all just huddled around it and then just lifted it up and set it on its hind legs," Michael told CNN affiliate KRON.

Honestly, I never really had it. They voted for this POS; let them suffer the consequences from his constituency.

What’s the problem? A few years ago libs were chuckling about vandalized Hummers and other SUVs. I guess it’s not so funny when it’s your car.

Wow, two lies right there in the first sentence. Smart cars are not that great for the environment, in two ways: One, their tiny size, and absolute lack of cargo room, mean you either make more trips or use something bigger, and they don’t really get all that great mileage anyway. There are several larger cars that do much better. They are great for parking in tiny spaces, though. Second, they’re not great for the bottom line. They’re surprisingly pricey. Several of those cars that get better mileage also cost less.

Why? Authorities don't know …
Why? Because it’s easy to do. The same thing was done to Volkswagens 50 years ago. Some were even picked up and moved.

I think the other problem with “smart” cars is the name.

If those cars are smart then the logical conclusion is the others are dumb.

The owners of “dumb” cars are likely to react in a negative way.

It is as if a nerd calls himself smart.

It is why no one is allowed to call someone else “retarded”

What a crock, smart cars only benefit is parking.. Arguing fuel efficient is nonsense. They get under 40mpg highway. Their city mpg aren’t bad at 34 mpg but hardly mind blowing many other traditional compacts are close to that these days if not better and many vehicles meet or beat its highway mpg.

The trade off for this is effectively if you hit anything or are hit by anything at highway speeds you have zero chance of survival, there is not enough space for deceleration the car body may hold its integrity but your body will wind up crushed and your brain will smack into your skull and odds of survival are insanely low.

Don’t condone the vandalizing but can’t say it’s overly surprising we live in a culture full of idiots today.

From that I heard their safety is better than expected but it is extremely uncomfortable to me. Drove a 2004 Smart Roadster (larger wheelbase, closer to a conventional car)- it is like a hybrid of golf cart and motorcycle. Quite a fun to drive though, might be convenient in a crumped European streets but I wouldn’t like to take a long trip or use it as a daily ride. Acoustic comfort, smooth ride is not about this vehicle.

These Smart Cars should not be left out on the street, they are a trip hazard. Kids need to put their toys away when they are finished playing with them.

How are they good for the environment? Because Marxists say they are? Bet if you really analyzed it without bias you would find they are no different than any other car.

Pray America wakes up

Way back when...when I was living in a dorm, we picked a fellow's VW Beetle up and carried into the dorm's lobby. The perps were never identified but the guy that owned the Beetle got a warning about freshman not being allowed to have cars on campus. No damage of course, we weren't vandals.

The local animal shelter has one. It’s sort of cute with custom graphics on the body. The only problem is that the larger dogs pee on the roof of the thing.
