Montanas Democratic senator trails his top Republican challenger by 13 points, according to a poll released on Thursday.
Thirty-six percent of respondents said they would vote for incumbent Democrat John Walsh if the election were held today.
Forty-nine percent said they would back his likely Republican challenger, Rep. Steve Daines.
Daines also fares well among key demographics. He leads among women, independents, and every age group surveyed (including 18 to 29 year-olds by a margin of 58 to 20).
The poll, which surveyed likely voters, was conducted by the Republican firm Magellan Strategies.

I think we can put that one in the ‘leans Republican’ column.
Both under 50 percent. That is not exactly great especially for a Republican red state.
Walsh was head of The Department of Military Affairs in the state government of Montana. $23,000,000 of Federal Stimulus money came up missing from that department. Did anyone ever find that money?
“Both under 50 percent. That is not exactly great especially for a Republican red state.”
Yes, but it’s a red state in presidential but trends democratic when it comes to the Senate, similar to neighboring South and North Dakota.
So a poll with that large a lead for the republican is telling.
“Walsh was head of The Department of Military Affairs in the state government of Montana. $23,000,000 of Federal Stimulus money came up missing from that department. Did anyone ever find that money?”
I have no idea. I live in MA.
Two observations:
1. The lead among 18-29 year olds is substantial, and good news.
2. Daines lags by 4% or so among single women (all ages). Another group that the GOP needs to figure out how to get through to eventually.
I hope so. But so many times when the Republican is below 50 percent, FREEPERS get nervous.
this was already being counted in the Republican win column, but I guess it’s always good to get confirmation.
18-29 year olds in Montana must be much much smarter than the average kid in the other 49.
Oh, aloha.
