North Korea has the capability to deliver on its threats to carry out a nuclear electromagnetic pulse attack on the United States, it has been claimed.
Dr Peter Vincent Pry, executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security, has reportedly seen a long-suppressed government report that concludes North Korea is capable of using an Unha-3 rocket to carry out an attack on the U.S..
He says the U.S. would be particularly vulnerable to such an attack, as any rocket from North Korea is likely to travel over the South Pole and approach from the south - something American missile defences would apparently be powerless to stop.
Such an attack on the U.S. would cripple the country's defence systems, not to mention cause chaos in any scenario where an electronic device is required - including road, sea and air transport, government and civilian communications and, of course, the throughout entire economic sector.
The leaked Department of Homeland Security report allegedly claims that North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un already successfully practiced an electromagnetic pulse attack on the U.S. in early 2013.

If they do, the few lights that they do have will be snuffed out permanently.
The fat little monster would lose all his playthings.
He may be stupid, he may be brutal, he may be insane, but he’s still capable of basic arithmetic, which is why he eliminates whole families of any and all perceived enemies.
Obama, you’d better do something. This might interfere with your golf games and fundraisers.
There is merit to the EMP, but not the over-hype. It would take quite a few EMP’s to do the job; one will just hurt us regionally. Beyond that, the NORK’s would cease to exist about 32 minutes later. I’m sure Canada would get in on the action because EMP doesn’t stop at borders. Mexico? I hope they are spared. Maybe their peep’s here will go home then.
Worry about the open borders and the 20,000 MANPADs
given to al Qaeda, first.
17000 mile minimum, out of a 10k missile. I doubt it.
If they do and succeed, we will not have the means to retaliate.
Yeah but they keep electromagnetising themselves instead. That’s why Kim Jong-un’s hair look like it does.
“North Korea is likely to travel over the South Pole”
Really, what rocket does NK have that can travel to Japan let alone under the South Pole
Basic math and travel time would let you know we have lots of satellites, aircraft and etc that could easily shoot it down.
NK wants more money from Americans - this is just there supporters saying hey, give them money to come talk.
Our president doesnt have the guts to retaliate in any forceful way. And by ‘forceful,’ I mean bomb the daylights out of NK!
> f they do and succeed, we will not have the means to retaliate.
It won’t take long for word to get to the submarine fleet. They cant destroy all communications with one nuke. The military has tempest-hardened communications.
The Norks would have just a few minutes to rejoice in their pyrrhic victory before being utterly vaporized.
Even if we had the means to retaliate, the celebrity president doesnt have the balls.
If 0bama gets his way with the severe reduction in our nuclear forces, we might have a hard time answering.
Sounds like a fantastic opportunity for us to shut down another 50 nuclear missile sites! /sar
We’ll just pull out their one plug and the country will go dark!
>If they do and succeed, we will not have the means to retaliate.
Military electronics are tempest-hardened. Even a hundred nukes won’t be able to take out all the communications.
If the order is given, the retaliation would turn the chia pet’s city into a smoldering radioactive crater.
Everyone here is replying emotionally, saying what they would do if THEY were President after suffering an EMP attack.
But that’s silly —the President is a completely different creature who strongly believes that his duty is to usher in a new Era Of Fairness in which the USA is diminished and has a level of power that is AVERAGE by global standards.
People aren’t considering that such an attack by NK might ENHANCE Obama’s goals time-frame.
It’s likely Obama would make scary speeches but would order NO counter-attack.
More likely he would make a counter-attack that had absolutely no goal other than attending to POTUS appearances.
Hearing sabre-rattling talk HERE is silly.
It’s only dark speculation but I might even consider such reports as POTUS conceptual prep-work for HIM ordering exactly such an attack —UPON *US*.
Puhleeze. Obama doesnt have the sense or courage to pull the trigger!
To believe otherwise is fantasy. Its a different time we live in.
Just what barry and eric need right now with a few member of congress after them. A perfect diversion.
This report and this guy are silly,
Missiles cannot get here directly let alone fly via the south friggen pole.
You’re right about the consequences for NORK; but, according to the EMP Commission, you’re very wrong about the number of EMPs required.
IMHO, no state will risk an EMP attack on the USA, for the reasons you mention. However, a non-state terrorist might try it. The most likely scenario being a launch from a freighter, within a few hundred miles of the coast. While the U.S.A. would probably glassify NORK, Iran, and possibly other possible conspirators (deployed nuclear subs would still be operational) — that might not suffice to deter non-state terrorists.
Retaliate and what, put N.K. in the dark like we got !!!
Have you noticed 99% of N.K. LIVES in the dark already.
One word: Boomers (as in Trident subs). ONE could wipe out all of North Korea.
You're probably right.
I could see him rejoicing in the suffering of Americans. He'd be likely to nominate the fat little Nork creep for Nobel Peace Prize.
So the little monster riceball literally has nothing to lose?
Or is he thinking, “The Japanese attacked America & ended up getting nuked, then guess what? The Americans rebuilt their entire country & look at Japan today!”
Another Duchy of Grand Fenwick? No, too rational.
well, is this a scenario that would finally allow the federales to put us in concentration camps or otherwise severaly restrict every activity we do, then maybe its what is wanted by TPTB...
We put some pretty serious hardware in the upper atmosphere years back while testing our goodies. We could not take out anywhere near the size of the continental United States, we knocked out some lights and made a lot of stuff fuzzy on the radio, but we did not blast a 3500 miles wide diameter area.
I too used to freak at the idea of a single warhead floated up 300 miles would wipe us all out if it came up from the southern hemisphere. Fact is, it won’t. Do damage? Sure, knock out everything? nope. Beyond which, how does a non-state terrorist get a payload into orbit in the first place? They would have to work with a nation in order to do so.
We have everything to lose, the Norks very little.
We will be the overall losers.
I suppose the danger would be if they got more help from China or Iran, for example. I still wonder if the EMP hype is commiserate to the threat.
The EMP Commission has an explanation about how it would work — way to complex for me to attempt to summarize here. Suffice it to say, it is convincing.
It would be a lot easier and cheaper to just shoot out a lot of transformers on the 3 grids at the same time.
If they ever decide to do that, launch two: one for us and one for themselves. It will save us the trouble of reducing that barbarian wasteland to a radioactive barbarian wasteland.
You might be right about that — beta testing has already occurred.
The damage doesn’t have to be comprehensive — just wide spread. Whether it’s an EMP attack or bullets placed in transformers; IMHO the effects of any large-scale damage to critical infrastructure would quickly be magnified many times over by the ensuing breakdown in social order. Consider Katrina, tropical storm Sandy, etc. Now, imagine that there’s no help coming from the rest of the country, because a large part of the rest of the country is also affected.
True that. But suppose the missile is launched from a ship that's out to sea (assuming that's technologically possible)? Then who do you blame?
North Korea? Iran? Russia?
I’d blame them all. And as Reagan said.. outlaw them....
Not even with submarines?
Sure, and their fleet of Yugo’s can out class any Corvette in a 1/4 mile race....
I would be far more worried about some terrorist group driving trucks into power substations in major cities during the summer months. The resulting riots, looting, and mayhem would do far more damage than any EMP attack.
How many minutes would it take to destroy the DPRK from one squadron of bombers or one submarine? And why hasn’t that happened already? Anyone here think that Washington, Madison, Monroe, Adams, Jackson, Lincoln, Grant, Teddy, McKinley, Coolidge, Ike, FDR, Truman or Reagan wouldn’t have already done so based on their threats, capability and known lunacy?
Nah. Not much worse than 1920 really, maybe even 1960s.
Kids these days...
I’m glad you think so, and am interested in your sources.
I read the book “One Second After” which was based on a US Naval College study on exactly this, in the book it was about 4 weapons over the US, and it was pretty “Thunderdome”. I think the ending number of living survivors after one year was under 10%.
That is quite a gap in theoretical outcomes...
It did produce an EMP but Hawaii which is 900 miles away only experienced slight effects. It knocked out a telephone company uplink, some street lights went out, some security alarms went off, etc...There was no massive black out. The electrical grid was fine there. The effects closer to the blast in uninhabited areas were much greater.
IF the North Koreans could get a missile here and IF they could construct a warhead similar to the W-49 and IF they could properly detonate it above Kansas City it would certainly cause a lot of issues. Cities as close as Columbus to the east, Denver to the west and Dallas to the south would barely be affected at all. Cities in the middle of the area such as Oklahoma City, Des Moines, St. Louis and Witchita would likely only have moderate damage to electrical infrastucture. Millions of people would die. We would go to war. But I don't think civilization would come to an end.
However, the world as the North Koreans know it certainly would end.
For all of you saying we would just wipe out NK if they did this...of course we could. If we could determine they were the culprits.
They could fire four pretty simple missiles off four barges off the east coast, west coast, and gulf of mexico. Then blow up the barges. Bye bye evidence.
Every nuke has a signature, so we would for sure know who manufactured them. I’m sure it would be Russian-made. They’ve already lost some. Allegedly, so have we. Just because we know who made it doesn’t mean we know “whodunnit,” or more exactly “who bought it.”
Point is that an attack on the US by EMP weapons will not be pulled off in a way that the attacker will be visible. That would be retarded on their part. Won’t happen. Stop dreaming.
Ironically, it could be the Russians behind all this, just setting up NK to be the patsy. They could (for example) tip off the US that they believe that NK has one of their old EMP nukes. The attack happens and sure enough it was Russian nukes. The Russians help us with proof that it ws NK, and we vaporize NK. Russia is unscathed and comes in to assist us in rebuilding. Damn, I should write a movie.
