Deep discount retailer Family Dollar announced on Thursday it will begin laying off workers and closing 370 stores nationwide after suffering a 35% drop in profits last quarter.

Analysts cite competition from Dollar General and Dollar Tree as contributing to Family Dollar's cost-cutting move. In response, Family Dollar says it plans to lower prices on 1,000 items to remain competitive with its price sensitive lower-income customers.

I’m amazed at how many stores Dollar General is putting in here in Indiana. Maybe they figure it’s economical to build like crazy, let some fail and keep going with new ones.

-— This is simply oversaturation of the market. There are about three various Dollar stores within a square mile of each other -—

That’s funny. I don’t remember these kinds of stores when Reagan was president.

And there were only 800 Wal-Marts.

Retailing has changed a lot.

Might be.....but I think D.G. is in trouble too.

I hope mine doesn’t close, they have some very cute things in there. I’d be suprised if they did, they are in a good location, nothing else like that for quite a distance.

They were a pretty good store until KKR bought them(DG). I used to go there often, but only go now if they are the only option.

Family Dollar is a failure because of a stupid name. “Honey pull over, I want to go to the dollar store...hey, this is $2, this is $5, this is $7. WTF?”. Dollar Tree IS a dollar store.

What you’re getting isn’t a bad deal...you’re paying 20 bucks for $25 worth of product all items you choose.....coupons limit those choices to their brands only....you can offset your loss by purchasing only items ‘on sale’ and use your $5.00 off coupon then. Either way you are still saving....even by simply shopping there without coupons or $ off.

I go to our store her for specific items as they are way cheaper than the Super-Market. Just remodeled so it’s quite nice, and it wasn’t bad to begin with. They enlarged it as well.

I also go to “Aldies”...I got hooked and never imagined I would find such great food...never mind the price cuts. Love their Bagels and everything else I’ve tried.....they have a great Chicken filled Breast that’s soo good and comes packed individually....nice for one.

Hope you get better deals ahead.

I see the closings of Dollar general etc...as indicative of what's coming economically more than anything else.

When the Dollar type food stores are closing and or pulling in it's generally because they've looked down the road and are making decisions accordingly. We are not going to only see higher prices, as we have been, but less selection and fewer items overall. I've seen this in the retail store I work part-time at as well, though it's not a food store.

Things are contracting pretty much everywhere....like people getting winter clothes out for the season ahead...they know winters coming...it's in the air!

Trying to figure this one out. I love my Family Dollar store. I have been buying tea bags from them forever - tagless, 100 to a box - used to be a dollar but finally worked their way up to 1.35. Still good for what you’re getting. A couple weeks ago I went in to get my tea bags, and couldn’t find anything, anywhere. They were in the midst of a massive rearrangement. As I was getting ready to check out, I finally found my tea bags - on a sale rack right by the checkout. And the clerk told me they were 88 cents. 88 cents??? “Oh, yeah, we’re not carrying them anymore.” I made some kind of joke about buying them all, but it wasn’t really a joke. Two days later I went back and bought nine boxes of them for 88 cents apiece. The clerk was funny - she said “You weren’t kidding?” Well, no!!

Part of what I saw in this rearrangement, was they got rid of this one (might have called it Family Pantry, don’t know, but it was a store brand - and good, too.) There was a second one I never bought, but it was there, too. And they had replaced all these brands with only Lipton. This seems to be the opposite of what these stories are saying. Why would they replace their own brand, inexpensive (but very good) brand with only national brands? Sure there’s an answer, but right now it doesn’t seem obvious.

BUT I DO HAVE NINE BOXES OF MY FAVORITE TEA BAGS.

Yeah, Aldi’s is great. I go there too. Recently they had pints of strawberries for 99 cents.

Dollar Tree is great if you need stuff like table cloths, party favors and aluminum pans. Sometimes you can find some neat little notions in there too. It’s worth visiting at least once a week.
