THERE are unconfirmed reports that the black box flight recorder from missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has been found.
Perth radio station 6PR tweeted the report, citing aviation expert Geoffrey Thomas.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who is in China, is giving a pre-planned press conference at 2pm AEST.

keep us posted
What is being reported here in Australia unofficially is that the fairly precise location of the flight recorder is now known. It is not yet reported as retrieved.
Candlelight vigil at CNN!
CNN’s Don Lemon just said it is a previously scheduled presser by the Aus. PM...
Right where it was planted.
Who gets to download the data?
it is 1:07 aest as we speak...so 50 ish minutes from now
It is, but if there is anything to announce officially, the media expects him to do so there. If there wasn’t a press conference scheduled, they’d be calling one but as there is one, no special one is being called yet.
...and of course if I had read the post above...
Color me cynical too. :-)
Thank you. Twitter is all atwitter over the rumor it has been found. I should have known...
I sure hope so. All the pinging was starting to get on my nerves.
I am assuming the plane is there also???
From what I have heard (and this is just what I have heard from usually reliable sources), the Malaysian Authorities (who have primary legal right to the data) have agreed that it will be accessed by the Australian Transport Safety Board, the (US) National Transport Safety Board, and a Chinese authority I can’t remember the name of. I suspect it will be primarily accessed by the ATSB simply for convenience (Australia’s facilities are closest), unless the recovery is complex in which case the NTSB are the best in the world for difficult data recovery, but the Malaysians would have the legal right to insist on doing it themselves.
I’m sure the “Black Box” will be lying all by itself on the sand, away from any wreckage.
Seriously, 16,000-20,000 feet down, how would you get that out of an airplane?
Australian Prime Minister has said he is going to speak to Chinese Premier this evening out of respect for the Chinese dead (the PM is in China at the moment) before making public comment.
When the majority of the major news outlets are touting a story, it’s a safe bet to look into the opposite.
If the plane is relatively intact, how does a remote sub get a black box out?
Check the graphics on that webpage that shows how deep the ocean is. I never had a clue Whales of all things, Mammals by the way, swam that deep.
2992 meters, “the maximum known diving range of Cuvier’s Beaked Whale”.
I actually don’t know, but it’s been done before, so they obviously have some approach that works.
Yeh I’m not holding my breath.
Australian PM @TonyAbbottMHR says officials ‘very confident’ detected signals coming from #MH370’s black box
It would be tough. In an F-16, the FDR is bolted to the frame of the aircraft by for four hex head fasteners.
The sub would have to have the ability to unscrew the fasteners with the properly sized driver.
Also, the wiring harness would need to be uncoupled or cut.
I don’t have any experience with CVR’s but the procedure would likely be similar.
“We have very much narrowed down the search area... series of signatures, some for very long periods of time... signal, from what we are very confident is the black box is starting to fade... as much information as possible before signal is lost.”
Extracts from recording of statement from PM, as best as I can type them. I can’t keep up with speed of speech.
They’ll be sending a pearl diver to get it.
And that assumes it is not resting on it or buried deep under silt.
IF they find a black box (huge if), then they’ll find a plane (or whats left of it) around it. Are you suggesting they will plant a whole plane there too?
If the black boxes are down there than so is the plane..if they find the boxes without the actual plane I will think some shenanigans are going on here
While I don’t know if this is true for all model of planes, black boxes are designed, in the event of a water crash, to disengage from the plane and float to the surface.
We’ll have to wait to see if the rest of the plane is attached
Angus Houston just threw cold water on PM Abbott’s statements. Said no major new developments.
“if they find the boxes without the actual plane I will think some shenanigans are going on here”
So what “independent authority” is going to go out to the “crash site” and “verify” that the plane’s there? Just look at the prospect of Flight 800 not being a “fuel tank” explosion despite all the FBI ascertions that it was. I mean the “trust” of all the world’s governments is at an all-time low.
Sorta begs the question, if it really is the black box, what the heck was the airplane doing waaaaay over there by Australia?
I would think that only Boeing, or the manufacturer of the recorder, can safely access it. I doubt that it has a USB jack that you can connect with a cable to any desktop PC and it immediately starts playback. As a bare minimum, the outer protective container must be opened - and they are made to survive in fire, or as this case may be, at the bottom of the ocean. You don't want to do this with a sledgehammer or a plasma cutter. You need drawings, documents, and special tools. Boeing has them. I doubt that the customer airline has them as well. It's not something they need to maintain from the inside - it's just a board with Flash chips. If it passes self-test, it's good to go. If it doesn't, back to the manufacturer it goes.
