Plans to build Chick-fil-A in Pasadena delayed after council vote

PASADENA >> Plans to build a Chick-fil-A restaurant across from Pasadena City College were put on hold this week after a divided council approved a request by Councilman Terry Tornek to revisit the restaurant chain’s request for building permits.

The project, which calls for an expansion of the existing drive-thru as well as removal of two protected trees, among other changes at the former Burger King site, was approved by a hearing officer in December and granted a conditional use permit by the Board of Zoning Appeals by a 3-2 vote in March.

However, Tornek requested the project be revisited because the expanded drive-thru is a “nonconforming use,” meaning it violates the East Colorado Boulevard Specific Plan, a document he says the city should not so easily discard. He criticized city staff for not adequately explaining or even referencing the specific plan’s restrictions to the council and to Chick-fil-A during the application process.

“If the East Colorado Specific Plan isn’t even mentioned, why are we spending all this time and treasure going through this planning process?” Tornek said. “The East Colorado Specific Plan is very precise in terms of what it allows and doesn’t allow and what its aspirations are, and this corner across from PCC is a big parcel, a corner parcel, highly visible, and the development of that parcel is of critical significance to that whole part of Colorado Boulevard.”

Chick-fil-A has tried to build its restaurant in Pasadena before, but was not approved. Daw said this time around the company has already spent more than $100,000 in city costs and the additional review from the council will delay the project, which was originally supposed to open this year.

If that’s the BK location I’m thinking of it isn’t directly across Colorado Blvd, but about a block down on the same side of the street.

Stuff like this is what drove Sonny Bono to get into politics as a republican.

They like to use them fancy words so you’ll think they’re smart.

The way I’m reading this it has something to do with drive-thru lanes. I say back off on the drive thrus. let the entire section of the city go into gridlock while people try to get in. They’ll quickly approve two, three or more drive-thrus.

Our local CFA is a half block off a main thoroughfare with two DTLs and sometimes (mornings and lunch, especially) the traffic is backed up for a block or so. They even have walking order-takers working the lines.

John Mackey shows how libertarians get a pass, but social conservatives like Truett Cathy get the cold shoulder.

The CFA closest to my house remodeled last year and put in another DTL. CFA likes the corner lots and they often put in double DTL’s. I don’t think that’s the real reason they’re not getting their approval.

Earlier tonight the local CFA had about 15 cars waiting in the single drive thru lane that wraps around the building. The nearby Taco Bell had two cars waiting.

So I came back later, when the CFA line was shorter.

There’s apparently going to be one in North Seattle, one in Lynnwood, and one...for sure...opening next year in Tacoma.

The Tacoma store is already approved. I do not know the status of the other two. I’ll bet it’ll be...interesting...getting the zoning and permits approved for the N. Seattle store. The homosexuals will scream bloody murder.

Pasadena is a developer’s nightmare. It’s just not about CFA. Had a friend who wanted a small variance for a property he was working on. He went to the planning commision meeting and saw a notorious NIMBY there and she said to him “Don’t worry, I am not here for you”.

“The love that will not shut up” shows its tolerance once again.

The people who define themselves by the manner in which they have sex & view the world through that perspective still regard CFA as an enemy to be destroyed.

BK is on the South-East side of Colosrdo, across from Starbucks. It’s the North-East side of PCC.

Forget the name of the street.

I’d much rather see a Chik fil a.

There are very few in that area.

I think now there is one in Westwood, right at the lower entrance o UCLA.

There is a big Chik fil a bill board near downtown LA now, on the 10 East.

They must be finally trying to expand in to the LA area.
