OCare exit strategy brings endless waits on hold: If you thought signing up was hard, try canceling
The Washington Examiner ^ | April 10, 2014 | Drew Johnson

I never wanted to be a pawn in President Obama’s absurd and irresponsible attempt to mandate, regulate and complicate the American health care system. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much of a choice.

I was a casualty of Mr. Obama’s Big Lie. You know the one: “If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan.” By the time my plan vanished, the only individual health insurance plans available had been captured by the tentacles of Obamacare.

Signing up for insurance under Obamacare was harder than making sense of Donald Trump’s hair. It took more than 20 attempts over four days just to get on the “Health Insurance Marketplace” website and shop for insurance. The plan I found most similar to my canceled plan cost nearly $1,000 more a year, and my deductible increased from about $2,000 to more than $5,000. So I was forced to pay almost twice as much for a whole lot less insurance.

It’s surprising there’s not a link to buy a solid-gold eight-track player on the Healthcare.gov site — everything else for sale in Mr. Obama’s marketplace is also ridiculously overpriced and pretty much useless.

Signing up for Obamacare was a tremendous hassle. But even that experience was a joy compared with what I went through to cancel my coverage....

He speaks of his plan vanishing. How and why did it vanish. A number of people have lost their health care because of actions by their insurance companies. What are the facts here. Blaming Obamacare is a soft target, but plenty of people were loosing their care every year because of company decisions. Of course, it was stupid of Obama to promise things he might have no control over. Personally, I still have the same health care I have had for a number of years, Kaiser Permanente. No one has asked me to change anything.

I find it hard to believe that canceling could be that difficult. JUST STOP MAKING PAYMENTS.

” Personally, I still have the same health care I have had for a number of years, Kaiser Permanente. No one has asked me to change anything.”

Well, as a retired person, I had my Medicare Advantage Plan summarily cancelled because it was “substandard.” In a perverse way Obamacare “helped me” because with the cancellation letter I became eligible to purchase any available Medicare Supplement (or another MA Plan for that matter). Ordinarily, as you age, with Medicare, you cannot improve your insurance plan absent a cancellation of your current insurance plan. FYI, Medicare considers Kaiser to be their “highest rated” MA Plan (the only one they rate as Five Star). Now, I have no personal knowledge of Kaiser, but over the years it has has the reputation of being as close to “socialized medicine” as we have had in this country up to now. Kaiser is a very different animal as opposed to all other healthcare systems. In it, your “choices” are quite limited, just like what’s happening now with the rest of the HC system thanks to Obamacare. So while lots of people like or even love Kaiser, it is the model for Obamacare. You have no choice of who you see, it has to be a Kaiser doctor and it must be in a Kaiser facility. I guess all you have to hope is that they caliber of their people is as good as those available to the rest of us in the open market. Medicare Advantage for me was a lot the same. Everything had to go through a Primary Care Physician, and you had to have “approval” to see anyone other than the PCP. Now, I go to whomever I want, no copays and no referrals.

Those who signed up for ObieCare’s automatic payment plan are unable to stop paying. If they can’t reach anybody through the exchange, their sole remedy is to close their bank account.

The Rocky Horror Health Care Act never ends.

Once it has its hooks in you it will take you to the grave.

Would that even work? Can they just "bill you later" by seizing your tax return?

Kaiser Permanente is a world class HMO. You receive all your care in its system, except in an emergency when its not possible to get to one of their hospitals in time. I have always been satisfied with my care with them when I lived in California.

It turns out you cannot keep your health insurance; you’re stuck with health insurance you don’t want!

Only in America.

“I find it hard to believe that canceling could be that difficult. JUST STOP MAKING PAYMENTS.”

Pretty sure the IRS has SWAT teams for that very reason.

No one has asked me to change anything.

Yep, they just changed it on their own.

All across the country insurance companies have changed the policies they offer because they were forced to under Obamacare. And the net effect of those changes for millions of people is that they lost their previous insurance, and now they have to pay more for less coverage, and in many cases no coverage at all.

In our state, and many others, the new insurance policies cost more but don't provide any out of network coverage. So, for example, if you need to see a specialist, or get health care out of state you are out of luck. Or more specifically, "uninsured".

This is why I’ve elected to go without health insurance until my employer’s open enrollment starts...assuming dear leader doesn’t find a way to screw that up.

No. The policy’s a contract between you and the insurance company, they’d have to try to collect, not the feds.

The tax refund could be gobbled up to pay the “Tax” for not having insurance, though.

How long has it been since you’ve lived in California?
