With a single phrase of compassion for immigrants in the U.S. illegally, Jeb Bush has prompted questions about his viability as a potential presidential contender and underscored how divisive the immigration issue remains for the Republican Party.
The former Florida governor sparked a conservative furor this week when he described illegal immigration in an interview as an “act of love” by people trying to provide for their families.
Backing Bush are some of the GOP’s most powerful insiders and financiers, who are hoping the party can woo Hispanic voters and rebound from Mitt Romney’s damaging “self-deportation” rhetoric in 2012.
“The worst thing that can happen to a political party is not for voters to decide they don’t like you,” said Alex Castellanos, a GOP consultant and former Romney adviser. “It’s for voters to decide you don’t like them. And that’s where the Republican Party is right now.”
Other GOP lawmakers and conservative activists, however, are cringing over Bush’s remarks, which triggered vocal opposition and concerns about “amnesty.”

He might be on to something, and it's the conservative base, probably half the Republican vote, who are now deciding the above.
The strategy of the GOPe is to insult and take the base for granted while pandering shamelessly to the Latino voters.

The problem with his argument is that we will ALWAYS have illegals in America If you naturalize every illegal here today, tomorrow even more will come here illegally.
Funny how Jeb never wants to talk about unemployment and Americans who can’t find jobs. It’s all about Mexico for him.

Dear Jeb. It’s an American value to simply be yourself, mind your own business, do your own work, raise your own family, and live your own life.
That’s called a normal life lived out of the spotlight. In the shadows, if you will.
So, not only are you wrong, but you’ve used the wrong words.
Illegals are “in the shadows.” They’re “on the lam”. That’s what happens to those doing illegal things: illegal entry, illegal driver’s license, illegal social security number, illegal access to social services, illegal enrollment in schools, illegal receipt of tax returns, and the list goes on and on.
Jeb, you don’t understand. That silver spoon’s been in your mouth so long that you wouldn’t know a middle class American family...if you STEPPED ON one.
