Federal workers watch 'Star Trek' on clock
By Jim McElhatton
Thursday, April 10, 2014

Exploring new frontiers in time and attendance fraud, a group of federal employees and contractors spent one day last summer at a local restaurant followed by an afternoon watching the latest “Star Trek” movie — all at taxpayers’ expense.

--SNIP--

The afternoon was all on government time. But once they learned they were being investigated, the employees went back and changed their attendance records to take personal leave.

Overall, about $3,500 reflecting the cost of staff time for lunch and the movie was returned to the government.

NOAA spokesman John Leslie said the agency holds “employees and contractors to the highest ethical standards.”

They made the Nixon error -- lying about it.
They also committed fraud with changing their times.

Smarter move: "Yeah we did it. DOCK us already."
At least they wouldn't have added to their "error" with lies.

Hey, look at it this way. That afternoon, at least they weren’t out harassing innocent citizens or conducting political witch hunts against conservative organizations. As far as I’m concerned all federal employees can spend their days watching movies, we’ll have a much better country for it...

......how did this country survive before there was an NOAA?

........close it down and issue a sub contract for ANY, if any, NECESSARY work to a qualified sub contractor?

That’s fine with me, but I’d rather not be paying them while they’re watching movies.

And they say there is nothing to cut in the budget

You said it. As much waste there is in federal agencies, the federal contract "industrial complex" is 10 degrees worse. We saw a glimpse of this with the ObamaCare website, but that is nothing.

The federal contracts for administering applications for ObamaCare is wrought with waste. Three separate offices around the country doing separate jobs. Easily, 1/3 of the employees in one office could get the job done. THEN, most federal contracts have 8(a) set asides. This is were the winner of the contract has to sub-contract a minority or women owned business.

I know employees of Federal Contractor who were told to slow down the work. The reason, Federal contracts are Cost plus contracts. There is no, zero, nada incentive for the contractor to do work smarter, cheaper or faster because that will reduce the value of the contract- the "plus" to the cost plus". This outing doesn't surprise me, these guys are probably bored out of there minds and have nothing better to do.

Wonder how many don't want to get busted watching straight porn because they claimed they were gay to get special hiring and promotion consideration.

At the end of last year, my company discovered how IT can enable cost cutting. If you were streaming video from Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus and other sites and you weren’t on travel after 8 PM (AKA, watching TV via work laptop while in the hotel), you were identified and fired.
Nothing says expendable like someone with hours of Amazon streaming TV at their desktop during business hours.
