Michael Reagan: Shut Up Tea Party, Your Candidates Are Kooks
http://www.westernjournalism.com ^ | april 10, 2014 | michael reagan

The Tea Party zealots who haven’t learned from their mistakes in 2010 and 2012 are trying their best to screw up the GOP’s chances to win the Senate this fall.

Where does the Tea Party find these people to run in primaries? Most important, why do they offer them up as legitimate Republican candidates?

The Tea Party bosses have been listening to too much talk radio. They seem to think that what makes a good Republican candidate is someone who sounds like a talk radio host.

But talk radio is all about bombast and attracting callers, not about winning elections.

If Republicans are going to win general elections in 2014 and beyond, we’ve got to put up principled conservative candidates who sound like senators, congressmen, and governors — not kooks.

He has a point. His dad’s nickname of the Great Communicator, undermines the crucial fact that Reagan was actually able to enact many of his policies. Many people can give a great speech and espouse all the right ideas - being able to implement them though is really what elections are all about.

I like Paul and Cruz, and would vote for either of them. But, I don’t see where either has a track record of making their ideas law.

in all fairness a few of these “tea party” candidates ARE kooks. It seems they are mostly opportunists who are not locked into reality.

We do not want to switch to a new fool just because they only slapped “tea party” on their resume.

We want THINKING brain active candidates who can not only walk the walk but have the brains to win an election.

he has a point.

many of these so called tea party opportunists are just opportunists who have zero chance of winning an election or obtaining any meaningful campaign donations.

look at primaries where the incumbent rinos are in no fear whatsoever of losing their primaries.

Primaries are there for a reason. It also weeds out the dead enders.

I realized Michael Reagan was a kook when he endorsed pro- ILLEGAL alien governor RINO Rick Perry for president. He also joined Perry in endorsing Ted Cruz opponent, David Dewhurst. In doing so, Reagan has rendered himself a punchline and proven that is not to be taken seriously. But I would imagine RINO Rick Perry devotees still love him.

I don’t think you understand my point, nor do I think you understand his. He talked about O Donnell and Angle - not primary losers. They WON primaries. And second, I don’t mind a discussion of this issue, but “Shut up” in the headline, and no mention of the abject failures of the Rove machine - make for an inaccuarate and despicable article.

You should be able to see that. This was no reasonable piece by MR.

Different issue.

If we want to win in primaries we have to have articulate WELL FUNDED conservatives. Not plastic pretenders or just plain stupid candidates.

Too many tea party candidates (one is too many) are the kook neighbor down the street running for president.

Many people can give a great speech and espouse all the right ideas - being able to implement them though is really what elections are all about.

Is that really what elections are about? Case in point, Obama: Great speeches. I guess he does support your point about implementation. I just thought elections were about putting people in government who support certain principles over others, and letting the implementation take care of itself. I never had any inkling of how Reagan would actually do what he campaigned on, I just knew that he would kick the Iranians' asses and get our hostages back, and not let the USA get pushed around.

Is that because MR failed at talk radio and/or is out of the biz now?

We either have principles or we don't. And if we don't, we are Democrats.

Just because the opposition - be they Ds or Rs - have a lead in the game of money and advertising doesn't mean we start throwing them the ball and laying down while they score unopposed. It's called 'keeping them honest.'

I agree with him. A lot of the Tea Party candidates were incompetent, stupid or politically tone deaf. Its no wpnder the GOP establishment abhors them. They screw up the GOP more than they hurt the Democrats.

Some conservatives are attracted to kooks. Think how that makes them look to people who aren’t conservatives. When you have your guys defending abortion as legitimate rape, explaining why you aren’t a witch, or handing out barf bags, none of that is funny! It turns people off.

Michael Reagan is right wondering if the Tea Party folks are actually secret Democratic operatives who plant the least politically attractive people in the GOP so they can lose to the Democrats. And none of that is endearing Republican officeholders to them.

Now they’re going to do their best to make sure the Democrats retain control of the Senate in the fall. Does that make sense? But some people don’t want to listen to the adults in the room. They should listen to Reagan.

I doubt you can even articulate why focus groups are by definition DEATH to any conservative message, period…..
