Gassy Cows Are Warming The Planet, And They're Here To Stay

An earlier version of this story said that the methane emissions associated with livestock come from their farts. In fact, most of those methane emissions come from belches.

Sorry to ruin your appetite, but it's time to talk about cow belches.

Humans the world over are eating meat and drinking milk — some of us a little less, some of us a lot more, than years past. Farmers are bringing more and more cows into the world to meet demand, and with them escapes more methane into the atmosphere.

In 2011, methane from livestock accounted for 39 percent of all the greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, according to a report that United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization released Friday. That's more than synthetic fertilizer or deforestation. Methane from livestock rose 11 percent between 2001 and 2011.

Those emissions, combined with emissions from all the other sectors of food production, aren't likely to go down anytime soon. Greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, forestry and fishing have doubled over the past 50 years, according to the report. Emissions could go up by 30 percent by 2050.

If these wackos keep it up, we’ll soon hear about fish farts warming the planet.

Geez!

Before there were cattle in the US, there were millions (likely hundreds of millions) of Buffalo roaming the plains in fantastically large herds.

Likewise, in Africa there were immense herds of such animals—numbering in the millions.

I guess there was no global warming in those days...

It is a horrible situation. Animals all belch, fart and exhale greenhouse gases. And when plants and animals die, their bodies all decompose into greenhouse gases.

It is obvious. The only way to save the earth is to eliminate all life and ship all of that carbon into the sun. Presumably, the last few people alive will take care of that task.

Composting is exactly like what goes on in a cows stomachs isn’t it?

They want to outlaw plant matter from decaying?

I saw a catfish that had little bubbles wafting up from his ass, and I swear he had a smirk on his face. The bubbles went to the surface and popped, releasing the toxic gas into our atmosphere. This would fit the warmest narrative that everything causes global warming.

Never fear. 2015 guidelines for the US diet point to NO MEAT.

“Meet the Radicals Creating the New Federal Dietary Guidelines

Environmentalism creeps into food policy”

http://freebeacon.com/issues/meet-the-radicals-creating-the-new-federal-dietary-guidelines/

“Clancy said beef production is the “greatest concern.”

Meat production is harmful to the environment because of manure runoff and “methane production by cattle,” she said, which has “a much stronger effect on climate change than carbon dioxide does per unit of methane.”

Following the talk, Dr. Miriam Nelson, a member of the DGAC committee, thanked Clancy for her “really, really wonderful presentation.”

“I think the good news here, in my mind, is that when we look at actually the current dietary guidelines—with the exception of fish, because I think fish is an issue—really we are talking about eating more plants, fewer animals,” she said.”

...really we are talking about eating more plants, fewer animals,” she said.”

We? Does she have a mouse in her pocket? Maybe all the leftist and elitists can eat more plants. That should cut down on cow methane, but I'm sure more people eating beans will increase their methane output.

As for me, they'll get my steak knife when they pry it from my cold, dead hands.

Shall I point out that there used to be buffalo herds that stretched for miles during the last little ice age?

Let’s just solve are energy problems by using cow methane. Just put a cow in the back seat of your car and stick pipe from the butt of the cow into the motor.

Many greens love animals and hate humans. They want as many humans eliminated as possible “to save the planet.” But here’s their quandary....animals release gas too. More animals means more gas released. So if they were staying true to their love of the planet over mammals, they would demand the slaughter of millions of animals. I can certainly agree with that.... especially every time I charcoal.
