On April 9th, a large group of Democrat representatives sent a letter asking President Obama to prohibit the importation of "military style, semiautomatic firearms."
Led by Reps. John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) and Eliot Engel (D-NY), the letter was signed by "about 80" Democrats.
According to The Washington Times, Conyers and Engel are basing their request on the 1968 Gun Control Act, which they claim gives Obama "broad authority to prohibit guns and ammunition from being imported into the country." The exception would be if the products are "generally recognized as particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes."
The Democrat representatives stated that the import ban was enforced under George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton and that restoring it "would make our nation safer." They asserted that the ban would also "support neighboring Mexico where drug violence is fueled by firearms flowing south from the United States."(continued)

It was supposedly to punish China for some trade violation but it was clearly meant to punish American Gun owners.
Those guns were of excellent quality. Maybe very good is closer but they were not junkers by any means. The M1911s quickly obtained a very fine reputation both for the quality of workmanship and the quality of the steel.
I forgot another one. They made a nice M-14 except the early stocks were poorly made. The metal work was fine. I think many people swapped out the stocks for original M-14 plastic ones.
I guess trying to pluck the goose that would hiss the least.

Do these Democrat congressmen think such a ban will prevent their Democrat constituents, the drug running gangs, from obtaining Military-Style, Semiautomatic Firearms? I don’t think so, given the gun running Democrats we have seen so far.
Assault type rifles are used in a minute amount of crime. Handguns are the favorite for criminal activities.
The focus on rifles is to deprive the citizen of the pure intent of the 2d Amendment, to defend against foreign enemies or a totalitarian government.
Nevada has them scared now, along with the fact that citizens are refusing to register their guns in blue states, openly defying unconstitutional authority. Law enforcement agencies are refusing to enforce unconstitutional law.
A red line is being drawn, and unlike the obamanation, the citizens are not going to redraw that line.
Like in Nevada, the fascist feds will have to withdraw or face dire consequences.
The king has banned the importation of 5.45 Russian. 7.62 x 39 is soon to follow. The "pistol" in question is basically a short barreled rifle without a stock.
