Russian Fighter Jet Flies Repeatedly Within 1000 Yards Of US Warship In The Black Sea
Zerohedge ^ | 11-14-2014 | Tyler Durden

As we reported last Friday, a second US warship, the destroyer Donald Cook, crossed the Bosphorus last week and entered the Black Sea at precisely the time when NATO was arguing that its encroaching presence around Russia should not spook anyone.

Apparently it spooked someone, Russin, which over the weekend decided to give the Americans a warm welcome. As AP reports, "A U.S. military official says a Russian fighter jet made multiple, close-range passes near an American warship in the Black Sea for more than 90 minutes Saturday amid escalating tensions in the region."

Guaranteed that the aircraft was “painted” by the ship’s air defense radar and the guns/missiles were tracking him.

1980, Arabian Sea, on the USS Okinawa, this aircraft hovered off our port side and took ictures of us expressing our discontent...

1981, about 1500 yards off our Port side, this BEAR Bomber flew by taking pictures of damage to the ship and aircraft after we had a crash on March 3, 1981.

This aircraft flew by March 4, 1981.

He probably had orders to not turn on the attack radar.

I’m sure that was done. The Roosky’s threat detection systems were screaming bloody murder at him the whole time, while we pinged the ever-lovin’ crap outta him with our weapon targeting systems.

That’s the game.

It was a SU-24 Fencer. Biggest threat it posed was crashing into the ship.

This may sound like nitpicking to some, but the Su-24 isn't a fighter. It's a medium strike bomber, which is worse in this scenario: its jobs are medium strike and ship-killing. Think of it as a smaller Backfire bomber. It's the Soviet analogue (and maybe some of it was outright copied) to our own F-111, which while having a fighter designation, was strike bomber par excellence.

Typical loadout for these kinds of anti-ship missions are another Russian copy of US equipment: the AS-20/Kh-35 "Harpoonski"

"...a second US warship, the destroyer Donald Cook, crossed the Bosphorus last week and entered the Black Sea at precisely the time when NATO was arguing that its encroaching presence around Russia..."

In political regulator class speech, preventing Russian expansionism is "encroaching," while Russian expansionism is okay. Anything for an international trade buck.

My daughter worked a short time with the guy who was the pilot of The “MIG” in that scene.
He was a very decorated pilot; and went on to head a nuclear energy group.

You got to wonder what a “The US Navy Phalanx Close-In Weapons System CIWS” would do to a Russian jet at 1000 yards. After all it was designed for ship protection from incoming missiles and other artillery.

Those radar controlled DU rounds would have to shred the jet into turbine dust.
