Police experiment with real-time universal surveillance
Breitbart ^ | 14 Apr 2014 | JOHN HAYWARD

Posted on 04/14/2014 1:23:17 PM PDT by kingattax

The Surveillance State goes big in an article from Gizmodo, which describes early testing of a "God's-eye" system that collates information from multiple sources on the ground, giving the authorities what inventor Ross McNutt describes as "a live version of Google Earth, only with TiVo capabilities."

What McNutt's system does grows more amazing, and perhaps more chilling, as you read more about how it works:

It's sort of similar to what your average satellite can do—except, in this case, you can rewind the video, zoom in, and follow specific people and cars as they move around the grid.

It's not specific enough to ID people by face, but, when used in unison with stoplight cameras and other on-the-ground video sources, it can identify suspects as they leave the scene of a crime.

We have reached the point where we need specific laws limiting the use of technology to spy on citizens.

I could support a very limited deployment of a system like this to clean up high crime areas like Detroit.

People in Detroit have a 4th Amendment right, too.

That won't happen, but I'd settle for parity... we get to use the same technology to keep track of government employees, bureaucrats and elected officials.

Sounds like a totalitarian version of The Machine on TV’s “Person of Interest.”

On the off chance that I'm not already on the Zyklon list:

I seem to recall that one element of the story is some individuals trying to get a copy of The Machine for nefarious/totalitarian purposes ...

Really? You only say that because you're hoping they will finish killing each other off. /s

A high enough crime rate makes any search "reasonable".

But seriously, didn't we have laws on how long government agencies could keep records and when and how they could share them. We need to update those for the electronic age.

Why should it just be for the police? Something like that should be on an open public feed. Anything else would allow an asymmetric balance of power between the people and their government hirelings.

Smartphones already have cameras on both sides, several locator systems, an accelerometer and a mic.

If you put all the data together from every smartphone out there, you can have real-time image and sound of everything. Even extrapolate it into a 3D space where anything can be observed from every angle.

I suspect this is why they’re working to outlaw civilian drone capability. The watchers don’t want to be watched...

Something tells me this isn't like "Person of Interest". I don't think they're interested in saving or helping you.

Tint your windows, obscure plates. Wear beards and sunglasses. Avoid roads you know have cameras.

Big Brother doesn’t just need to be spanked, he needs a funeral.

What a PERFECT way to make EVERYONE a criminal and arrest anyone big brother sees fit. Have all this data on gigantic servers, pass a few laws here and there, then voila, rewind the tapes on your political enemies and find them doing something that is now illegal and round them up.

Of course the federal government won’t use law enforcement or surveillance tools to punish political enemies. Just ask Lois Lerner.
