I don't blame this guy - I blame our poor education system instead.
This guy is proof that it's way too easy to get into college. He didn't even know how to pronounce "Achilles." We need to have fewer people in college, not more.
It's also pathetic that the host of the news program, as well as 75% of the audience, thinks that the rules should be waived so this guy can be declared a winner.
That being said, I do praise him for being a good sport about it.
The Pro Golf tour shows that performance under pressure is difficult for many. Human Nature.
I challenged Pat Sajak to use “Fort Michilimackinac”. LOL
Do you have a link to the video clip....? ;-)
And he won, by the way, so he must have been doing something right.
And he won, by the way, so he must have been doing something right.
With a quota system in place, people like Julian Batts, get a free ride into universities. Here's information about the racist Hudson & Holland Scholars Program at Indiana University that allows for the unqualified, including Batts, to take up space at educational institutions, denying opportunities for those with actual merit.
He did better than most special ed students would have.
I saw this the other night and I think he got cheated.
I want to see the clip of YOU!
I’m sure the folks back at Indiana U. were thrilled that he was wearing their sweatshirt.
I’ve never been on the show. I talk to Pat Sajak on twitter pretty regularly.
>> don’t blame this guy - I blame our poor education system instead.
This guy is proof that it’s way too easy to get into college. <<
In college and can’t pronounce “Achilles?”
You left out “too easy for SOME PEOPLE to get into college.”
EEO college recruits are like EEO hires — the thumb on the scale hurts the candidate, the institution and society.
Would YOU want a doctor who didn’t really pass his boards but instead was given + points for skin color? Same for lawyer?
Obviously I saw that episode and used it as an example of what “diversity” programs produce. In this case this guy was embarrassed in front of MILLIONS of people.
Give him a break! He was using the Ebonic pronunciation........
Obviously, he had never heard the name pronounced before. Ignorance is not stupidity, but it can be amusing.
I once had a young fellow call me, trying to sell season tickets to the symphony. I asked him what were some of the pieces or composers on the program for the season. He made a valiant attempt at pronouncing (phonetically): Choppin’, Beat Hoven, and Back. Sadly, many young folks have never heard the music or been exposed to culture outside their neighborhood.
>>I challenged Pat Sajak to use Fort Michilimackinac. LOL<<
My prior post notwithstanding, let’s see who he does with Duquesne Incline or the Monongahela River.
Or Port Hueneme....
But none of these are “Achilles” which I learned about in GRADE SCHOOL.
It’s a game show! Give the guy a break! Feel sorry for the U that was on his chest!
Or, for that matter, North Versailles Township.
He might be able to pronounce it just fine but not when he’s looking at it. I’ve got a few words like that, something about the spelling make my mouth say “that can’t be how that’s pronounced”. “Mignon” is like that, I love filet mignon but if I order it I have to make sure to not look at the menu seeing the word confuses me, could say it all day without looking at it, just don’t look at it. And that’s without a bunch of TV camera looking at me and thousands of dollars on the line.
The others got clobbered by the wheel. His only “something right” was that he got to go again after the wheel clobbered ... sort of like being the next fence post.
I was directing my post to the person that said he got screwed. He didn’t, and he screwed up 3 times to the tune of 72k.
That and a shot at million bucks in the bonus round. I liked the irony of the girl next to him just smiling and cashing in, all the while wearing that Texas A&M sweatshirt.
Sucks to be stupid. Now he has clearly demonstrated to the world how he got into college.
My wife is a former winner - 27 years ago. She really wishes she could go back on, she’s a LOT better now, and she was darn good then.
>>Or, for that matter, North Versailles Township.
How is that pronounced? If you’re talking Versailles, KY, the local pronunciation is ver-SAILS.
I don't watch the show and don't have any sense of the flexibility on pronunciation, but offing a kid on a mispronunciation strikes me as cheesy.
Yes, I'm ok on Achilles and "all them dead Greeks," but I could easily butcher a French or Spanish name, let alone an African or Asian one. There are a lot of words/names I know by sight but might mispronounce. "Beyonce," for example, or "Eminem," which I always want to pronounce as "enema." Some of the names out there now are pretty outlandish.
This brings us back to Cultural Literacy 101. Kids aren't going to know what they aren't taught, and the canon ain't what it used to be.
That is easy. In KY we say Ver-sails. Everybody knows that. If you want a hard one try Louisville. Louie-ville. Looaville. And many others.
I'm assuming you forgot the "/s" after your comment.
How do you screw up on Wheel of Fortune?Mistake Vanna for a guy??
As one who does not do well under pressure, I can commiserate.
Great post 16!
>>Sucks to be stupid. Now he has clearly demonstrated to the world how he got into college.<<
That is unfair. He seemed bright, just uneducated.
He did indeed demonstrate to the world how Affirmative Action hurts the recipient as much as the institution and society.
I 100% guarantee I will not have a Black nor Hispanic doctor or lawyer. I will choose an ex-pat, who I know had to COMPETE for entry and passage, first.
That isn’t racism, it is recognizing the harm AFA does.
I have a friend that was with Sajak when
they were both on AFVN radio.
They used to talk..said Pat was and still
is a nice guy.
"Mingo Creek Church was used by the Mingo Creek Society (1794), as a nerve center for protest against the whiskey excise tax!"?
U need to red up ur posts...
Put her back on and split the proceeds....
Cryptic responses like yours always require a follow-on so here goes.
Why do I have to qualify my reaction?
I probably read at least a book per week and have done so for about 50 years. I can be having a conversation and a word will pop into my head. I have read this word countless times and it just seems natural using it, but lo and behold when I start to speak it I realize I’m stumbling because I have never spoken it before.
After I git back from the Jint Iggle ta git some Klondikes! :)
I watched the vid. What an embarrassment. Ignorance aplenty, yet I feel sorry for the guy, maybe he will learn something in college that he should have learned in elementary school.
Next time you come across Pat ask if he
remembers a guy name of Randy Stone from
AFVN days.Randy would get a kick if he`s
remembered,he`s in very poor health these days.
I still cringe at my screw up in 6th grade, pronouncing Yosemite as “yoze might.” I had moved from Va to NC, and we were WAY ahead of the NC class when I got there. The teacher was pleasant, but not stellar. Being the jerk I was I corrected her a couple of times.
Needless to say, she joined the students in what seemed like an hour long laugh at my expense when I screwed up Yosemite. I still hate Yosemite Sam to this day.
That isnt racism, it is recognizing the harm AFA does
Only a liberal would see that as racism, a conservative calls it "common sense".
LOL at the Yoze Might. Years ago while camping at Yosemite, a car pulls over ( it had Pennsylvania plates) and the woman asked us how to get to Yoze Might Falls. Between her accent and Yoze Might , it took us a few seconds to figure it out.
Yeah, definitely a failure of the ed. system. I hope he recovers.
