Tens of thousands of Minnesota workers have big raises coming their way, courtesy of a new minimum wage law that Gov. Mark Dayton signed Monday, which will take the state from one of the nation’s lowest rates to among the highest.

At a ceremony in the Capitol’s Rotunda, Dayton hailed the hourly jump of more than $3 spread over the next few years as providing “what’s fair” for hard work put in. He said he has been stunned by GOP resistance—it passed the Legislature with only Democratic votes—to increasing the guaranteed wage from $6.15 per hour now to $9.50 by 2016 and then tie it to inflation.

“We’re not giving people any ticket into the upper-middle class,” Dayton said. “We’re giving them hope.” …

They will never understand that raising the Minimum Wage and putting more money into the hands of low skilled workers increases inflation to the point we all suffer.

That presumes pure ignorance. Probably correct for the typical ‘Rat voter.

But, I fear it is more nefarious, at other levels. The MW is tied to union contracts, it is tied to the ‘Rat modus-operandi of *less* jobs, leading to more dependence, and ultimately leading to more voters that “earn their living”.

Nah, they just jacked any sense of accomplishment the guy who worked his way up to $9.50 an hour had when he realizes the new hires are making the same as he is.

Consequences of this reverberate beyond the bottom of the pay scale.

looks anytime you go through minnesota, better stop at any of its border states fill up get your McDonalds happy meal and get through minnesota very quickly.

guaranteed wage/ look at places in michigan where this in effect Ypsilanti, Lansing and Ann Arbor. the cities are hellholes, because of guaranteed livable wage.

whenever i have to travel for medical appointments to Detroit area and to Rochester, MN (mayo Clinic), and strive to get the appointments done and out. I never stop anywhere around Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti. Now I will have to do the same for Minnesota.

What a way to ruin a great state.

You are exactly right about union contracts. It’s amazing that this is such a little known fact, a union dirty little secret for sure.

What the left won't admit is there are lots of workers whose value to an employer is less than the current Federal minimum wage. Business owners I know are quick to give raises to good employees in order to retain them. But there are other employees where the minimum wage is more than their work is worth.

When allowed to function freely the marketplace does a nice job of allocating payroll appropriately.

I’ve long advocated for the teaching of basic economics as a separate course in high school. I understand that such courses do exist but that their numbers are very small.

Armed with knowledge of the effects of minimum wages on employment, voters would understand why this is a very bad idea.

Tens of thousands of Minnesota workers have big raises coming their way, right before they get laid off.
