Hundreds of low-level and medium-sized earthquakes have struck central Idaho since last month, puzzling geologists who wonder whether the ruptures portend a much larger temblor to come or are merely the rumblings of a seismic fault previously thought to be dormant.
The recent earthquake swarm, beginning on March 24 and climaxed by a 4.9 magnitude tremor on Saturday, has produced no reports of injuries or severe damage but has rattled nerves in a region where Idaho’s most powerful known quake, measured at 6.9, killed two children in 1983.
Saturday’s earthquake was the strongest recorded in the state since 2005 and was followed on Monday by a magnitude 4.4 event that struck 10 miles north of the small ranching community of Challis, Idaho, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. …

Isn’t Yellowstone right up there on the Wyoming-Idaho border? I don’t mean to be a conspiracy theorist, but there sure have been a lot of events lately that, when tied together, form a fairly strong cluster of datapoints around that area. It might be nothing more than the human tendency to infer a pattern where none exists, but on the other hand, no one has ever actually seen a volcano like that build up to an eruption, so do we really know what we should be seeing?
Earthquake swarms do precede volcanic eruptions, certainly. Take note that other volcanoes in other states have also been subject to lots of quakes recently.
As for the nature of what can come out of Yellowstone, no real info on that right now. Size of caldera is not a general indication of size of vent, after all. Not to mention that there are many other volcanic features in Idaho that can reactivate without warning.
Edgar Cayce mentioned, as an aside to his being reborn in about 2100 AD in Nebraska, that at the time, Nebraska would be the west coast of America.
A 9.0 in DC would be welcomed.
It’s also right next to the Bakken fracking area, when measured in Eco Miles. It’s the fracking.
Way back in 1983, I was in Biology class at Nampa High School. My desk started moving across the floor. I turned to my classmate who shared the desk with me, and was about to ask why she was moving it. However, it was obvious she wasn't, as she was sitting back from it with her feet under her chair and her arms crossed. The desk was moving on its own. Then I looked up and the light fixtures and bookshelves were swinging and swaying.
Nampa, Idaho is about 140-150 miles SW of Challis. The earthquake we felt in Nampa back then originated near Challis at Borah Peak. It was a 6.9. There were two fatalities in Challis when a brick storefront fell on two children walking to school that morning.
I'll have to give the folks a call and see if they've been shaking more than normal...
