Jindo, South Korea (CNN) -- There were 46 lifeboats on the sunken South Korean ferry -- but only one was deployed, CNN affiliate YTN reported Thursday.
CNN has not been able to independently confirm the report. If true, the report will add to the anger and desperation of families still waiting for word on the fate of 287 missing passengers.
Video acquired by another affiliate JTBC showed at least 12 of the white survival capsules still attached to the ferry even as it was keeled over in the water. The survival capsules hold lifeboats....
At one point or another, the massive rescue efforts has included 169 boats, 29 planes and 512 divers.
Crews will next use cranes next to stabilize the ship....
The hope for survivors largely hinges on whether trapped passengers are in isolated pockets of air on the ship.
"From the images that I've seen, there's clearly some areas of the hull that are above the water, that are not flooded," Mike Dean, the U.S. Navy deputy director for salvage and diving, told "CNN Tonight."
"So absolutely, there could be areas in there where there is breathable air, but the trouble right now is the temperature and getting people to them."
Most of the bedrooms of the 353 passengers were on the fourth level of the five-floor boat.
Passengers faced a terrifying choice as the vessel rolled: obey commands barked over loudspeakers to stay in place, or don life vests and jump into the chilly ocean water....
"Don't move," a voice warned, according to a recording obtained by CNN affiliate YTN. "If you move, it's dangerous. Don't move."
That announcement, some witnesses worried, may have cost some passengers on the ferry their lives....

So just how much time did they have to deploy the lifeboats? None, from reports from witnesses. There was a sudden sharp noise, it listed and floundered. Friggin’ media experts at it again. We need to blame someone. Could it be a Nork operation? I’ll bet they never thought of that one.
I wonder if the crew told the kids to stay in place so the crew could escape, which they apparently did?
They had time enough to tell all the kids to drown in place -- why couldn't they have told them to head for the lifeboats.
The Captain must have trained at the Costa Concordia school of how to abandon ship.
If you look at the videos the ship was surrounded by other ships and boats before it sank with helicopters overhead. It seems like there were more than enough assets to get everyone off before it went down. Unless, like the story said, the crew ordered passengers to remain in their cabins and they died there.
Nobody reported any kind of explosion so it's unlikely. More probably a navigation error and the captain drove it over a rock.

Was he wearing women’s clothing?
Irregardless if it was surrounded by other ships and also helos above, the reports are that the listing and floundering were a sudden event apparently not foreseen by the crew who may have thought they had the situation handled and wanted to secure the vessel before adding more confusion to the decks. Something sudden apparently happened that took all of those options away.

The one report I saw last night one of the survivors was adamant about the sudden event calling it maybe an explosion or something big breaking right before it listed.

As you can see it's daylight. There are ships and aircraft engaged in rescue. But where are the passengers? They must have already been trapped below decks by the crew orders.
I read this morning that they are pumping oxygen into the ship in hopes of keeping survivors alive in there until they can get to them.
I am talking about video of the event, not a collection of stills after the fact. Nothing in your link to see the events as happening in real time to either disprove or add credence to my or your opinions of what we know of the vent in total.
Lord this world is a tragic place, all those kids are probably lost.

I was on a cruise ship a few years ago that had to maneuver to get a woman to shore from the choppy Atlantic location to save her life. It took hours, and was very risky, because they had to use a helicopter. Why? Any emergency craft could not be sent out in really bad weather conditions.
A lot of discussions went on among passengers during that time, many of them quite knowledgeable. The takeaway from those discussions is that the cruise ships know dang well there will be a significant loss of life if they do an evacuation by lifeboat. That might be why they never tried it with those stranded cruise ships a few years ago, and they were in calm waters.
This is another case of a journalist not doing their homework and trying to understand the problem the captain faced. With his knowledge, the best place for him to be might well be off that ship and safe.
