There has been the usual tax day-related glut of articles from liberal publications urging a federal takeover of the tax preparation business. As always, the ultra-left wing blog Pro Publica took the lead, followed predictably by outlets such as Slate, Vox, and Tax Analysts, as well as respectable news outlets like Bloomberg View and Yahoo!.
The basic argument is always the same: the IRS has all this information on you anyway, so wouldn't it just be easier and better if they simply prepared your taxes for you? Wouldn't that be better than having to pay some rent-seeking middleman? This flawed line of thinking fools many a reporter this time of year, but it's refuted pretty easily once you scratch beneath the surface. Below are the top seven reasons the IRS should not prepare your taxes for you:

There are tens of millions. Very, very many who only have to file a 1040EZ or what I like to call a 1040EITC. For them it is cash in hand and they don’t even have to go sit down in a big box store and have them rake off $50 bucks.
This idea represents the all time and forever winner of the Jim Robinson Award for Conflict of Interest. Since letting the IRS prepare you Income Tax Return represents the maximum achievable Conflict of Interest it has been decided that there will be no awards of this valuable prize in the future.
Any tax ‘credit’ is a de facto violation of the 14th Amendment. Government is not and should not be empowered to pick and choose who must obey the tax code as written.
...and I realize that credits are part of the code itself but that is merely more mockery of equality before the law.
I certainly agree it is inherently arbitrary. The fact that they insult the working, net-taxpaying citizens of this country by calling it “Earned Income [tax credit]” just adds insult to injury in my opinion.
To further call it a ‘credit’ is even more injurious.
It is a program that is designed to redistribute income and does so in a matter that pretends people actually worked for that pretend income and receive ‘credit’ for taxes they never actually paid.
Frankly, no matter how hard you work or what your values are or how you vote - all that, if you do not pay net taxes you are not a producing American. You made bad choices and are getting money out of the pockets of others who actually worked for it.
Also, please don’t tell me that payroll contributions to FICA OASDI and Medicare are taxes: they are not - they are part of a defined benefit insurance plan.
Federal Insurance Contributions Act, Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance, and Medicare insurance payments.
Thanks for the ping, foxfield.
OKEYDOKEY, FairTaxers! Here is yet another reason we should redouble our efforts to rid the USA of the evil Marxist inspired “Progressive Income Tax” and the evil IRS!
I’m telling you that the FairTax is all about FReedom — Americans being FRee to work, earn, save and invest without the heavy, heavy, (AND getting heavier!) hand of government interfering with your productive economic activity!
The criminal behavior of the LIEberal/Sopcialist/Marxist/Fascist Ophonybama administration MUST be curtailed, and FairTax is a VERY good way to start sorting out the good guys FRom the bad guys!
Let’s get to it!
