Portland Reservoir to be Drained After Teen Pees in Water
NBC ^ | April 17, 2014

Posted on 04/17/2014 7:02:20 AM PDT by don-o

Peeved Portland, Ore., officials plan to drain millions of gallons of treated drinking water from a city reservoir after a teenager was caught on surveillance cameras taking a brazen bathroom break.

The unnamed 19-year-old was captured urinating through the iron fence at the Mount Tabor Reservoir just after 1 a.m. Wednesday, water bureau officials said. Two others with him, ages 18 and 19, were also caught trying to scale a fence.

The unsavory act has prompted officials to decide to flush 38 million gallons of drinking water — or the equivalent of 57 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Generally, urine in such a large volume of treated water poses little risk to the public, and even animals are known to answer the call of nature into the reservoir, which gets its water from the Bull Run watershed.

Seems crazy to me. Assuming it’s an open air reservoir, imagine birds and other wildlife will do their business in the water, or right on the shore, so that it will seep into the water.

And imagine leaves from trees, pollen, dust, sticks, and other items end up in the water too.

Assuming the water is treated before it’s pumped out to customers, one person urinating is not going to pollute the water supply. Certainly not pollute it any more than can happen from animals or other sources.

How do we get people this stupid in charge of things

Just explain to the public that THE WATER GOES THROUGH A TREATMENT PLANT before it is piped into the system

Why is potable water left exposed? I mean unless this guy has a HUGE bladder I’m not sure how much his relieving himself would effect 38M gallons, but if it is exposed to the open air he isn’t the only living organism relieving himself in that water.

How about parts per billion? That might even not be fine enough.

What was W C Fields' saying about water? Something about fish fornicating in it.....?

More on the order of parts per Trillion

AND - its a good thing there are no fish, or birds or squirrels or coyotes peeing in the reservoir.

Assuming 1 piss = 1 quart, I’d say 1 part to every 152,000,000 parts.

But, all of you talking about dead birds and wildlife have to remember that birds and wildlife are noble life forms and humans are not.

What a bunch of morons running THAT water agency.

One pint of urine (very full bladder) in 38,000,000 gallons is 3.3 parts per billion.

Yep. Sounds like they need to flush it all, sterilize the liner, fill it back up and wait for the animals to pee in it.

Only in Portland could this idiocy happen.

The reservoir is one of five the city is in the process of replacing with underground
storage to comply with federal regulations.

“Assuming 1 piss = 1 quart, I’d say 1 part to every 152,000,000 parts.”

An adult male feels the need to urinate at 150 ML. The adult bladder holds only 300 ML. 150 ML is 5 OZ.

The contamination is no more than the mouse dung or hair allowed in chili to be passed as “wholesome”. Rice stored that has mouse or rat urine on it is also used because it is cooked prior to consumption. Anyone else ever spray p-dimethyl amino benzaldehyde on stored dry goods to show how many times a rodent urinated upon an item? The contamination on alcohol products is also significant but the alcohol renders them “wholesome”.

The things one learns on FR!

So multiply times 6.4 =’s 972,800,000 or almost 1 part in 1 billion.
