The way the Sheriff’s declaration stuck out in the story, the writing makes it sound like the sheriff’s description of the deputy’s shooting of his own leg was one of self defense...as in “The deputy shot his leg in self defense as it was attempting to kick the deputy’s own backside. The other leg, grieving the loss of its long time companion, called for the trial of the deputy for the shooting of his friend, known simply as Treyvon!”
