Kansas Students and Parents Not Thrilled About Michelle Obama
Townhall.com ^ | April 19, 2014 | Christine Rousselle

An invitation to Michelle Obama to speak at the Topeka Unified School District 501 graduation ceremony by the district has some parents and students crying foul. The First Lady's appearance caused the district to combine all five schools' graduation ceremonies into one mega-ceremony, and may force limitations on the number of tickets that can be distributed to friends and families. A petition drive has been started to request that the district reconsider their plans about the combined ceremony, or have Michelle Obama speak at a separate event from the graduation. The First Lady was invited to speak on the anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision that struck down segregation in schools.

Parents are concerned that the First Lady's visit would overshadow the fact that their children are graduating from high school, and the individual schools are upset with the fact that their unique graduation traditions will be set aside for the combined ceremony.

"I'm a single mother who has raised him for 18 years by myself," said Tina Hernandez, parent of Topeka High School senior Dauby Knight. "I've told him education is the only way out. This is one of the biggest days of their lives. They've taken the glory and shine from the children and put on Mrs. Obama. She doesn't know our kids."

Taylor Gifford, a senior at Topeka High School, started the petition drive not for political reasons, but because she is the oldest of eight children and is worried that her siblings and relatives would be shut out of the ceremony due to the new ticket limits. Graduates in years past have not been subjected to a ticket limit and were free to bring unlimited friends and family members to the ceremony. While no formal ticket limit has been set, families were advised last week to plan on receiving four tickets.

Gifford said her initial reaction to the news was excitement, saying she was "freaking out" about the prospect of the first lady speaking at graduation. When rumors of limited tickets surfaced, Gifford felt like the focus was being shifted from the students to Obama.

"People think it's a great opportunity, but it's the graduates' time. They are getting that diploma that they worked so hard for," Gifford said. "Families are feeling that they are being cheated out of the loved ones special day."

This is definitely a tricky situation, and it's easy to see where both sides are coming from. While the students are lucky that a figure like Michelle Obama is willing to speak at their graduation ceremony, it appears that this is creating a logistical nightmare for parents and students--who should be the main focus of the event. High school graduation is, for some of these students, the biggest event of their lives so far, and represents a major accomplishment that should be celebrated with as many people as possible. I think the obvious solution would be to revert to the original plan of separate graduation ceremonies for each school (meaning that graduates would be able to invite as many people as they wish), with the First Lady speaking at a different event that graduates can choose to attend.

I wouldn’t be thrilled either.

I’d pretty much tell them to just mail me my diploma, because really, who the Hell cares what this creature has to say about anything?

I would say explicitly disinvite her, but Mom Jeans’d probably nuke Kansas. Just a bunch of bitter clingers whose votes don’t count anymore anyway.

Graduation is a day about the students. If the first lady or another big celebrity attends, it becomes more about the celebrity. Keep it focused on the students.

Looking back at my graduations, I had six or seven family members present. I can't imagine having to exclude some of them because Michelle Obama wanted to have "a moment". The family members come to see their loved one, not listen to predictable drivel from the wife of a dictator. Haven't these taxpayers sacrificed enough for her whims?

INGRATES! Don’t they realize how special they are to have this most magnificent of all graduation speakers?

If the school district doesn’t back off (unlikely), maybe the individual schools should do what so many large universities do, i.e., have one central grad ceremony, then go back to their own school and hold their own ceremony with their own audiences and their own traditions.

That was my thought exactly. I remember how much it meant to my grandparents to be at my graduation. The Daily Mail says there are over one thousand signatures so far and that Moochelle's office "did not respond" to a request for comment. I hope she is forced to cancel.

Could be interesting. She and the other people on the stage will expect everyone to stand and applaud when she gets up to speak and when she finishes. I bet that there will be a lot of people who don’t stand up or clap. I was at the Symphony on the Prairie the last time that then Gov. Sebilius was there. Only about 15% of the audience stood up. It was also memorable because I got to meet and shake hands with then Senator Brownbeck and tell him I looked forward to him introducing the symphony the following year.

The district has done a terrible disservice to the students and their relatives with this invitation.

I agree with the idea of having the Wookie speak at a separate function.

blah blah blah.
We know why the Jayhawks/Wildcats/Shockers don’t want her. Her reputation precedes her and her worn-out act blows goats. Let them enjoy their graduation. Give it a rest. Leave those kids alone Chewbacca, it’s not all about you.

As one of the Board members said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students, to see the First Lady!” , as though graduating from high school is nothing compared to that.

The only reason Moochelle is going to Kansas is to race-bait the anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education. No other reason.

This is way more than just limited seating.

As with all royal visits, the Secret Service will need the names of EVERY person attending, in advance. Everyone will be wand & frisked, causing long, hot delays standing in the security line. Parking will be restricted. Traffic will be a nightmare. The Media will cause even more chaos. It will be a very unpleasant circus.

All to accommodate the “Queen”.

Neither will a graduate’s younger siblings be there. They miss a valuable lesson in life.

It is outrageous that families will be limited at all.

I understand 4 schools are combining their graduations. Why? This just limits seating.

They can’t cancel her now.

She left yesterday, driving her electric car.

Seeing as her weight etc, factors in, it will take about 5 weeks to drive the 1150 or so miles from DC to KS.

"Hell of a graduation ceremony you got there....be a shame if something happened to it..."

That’s why I think they should go ahead and just have this “unified” ceremony then have another at their own schools. It’s what all big universities do, have one mega ceremony, then each of the colleges/divisions has its own. Everybody’s happy and nobody’s threatened!
