New clinical trials underway for advanced lung cancer patients

HARI SREENIVASAN: Another medical story that caught our attention this week. Word of what’s described as a pioneering clinical trial for patients with advanced lung cancer. What’s novel is not necessarily the drugs being used, but how many and how they’re being targeted. Dr. Mark Kris, an oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, joins us. So what are they doing in the U.K. with this clinical trial? What’s so interesting about it?

DR. MARK KRIS: They are taking a discovery that was made here almost ten years ago now where specific genes are damaged in lung tumors. And the damage brought on by those genes makes those cancer cells very susceptible to medications. So if you find one of these genetic changes and give a patient a drug targeting that, almost surely their cancer will shrink and normal tissues are not affected. I mean it’s exactly what oncologists hope to do. What they’re doing now in the U.K. is developing a nationwide program partnering with pharmaceutical companies that are developers of these drugs to do the testing in a much more generalized way and to test for many of these different gene mutations at the same time. So in essence a patient might have ten chances to find something in the tumor that’s in their body. Ten chances to get a medication. And also the pharmaceutical companies supplying drugs to go along with the discovery of those genetic markers and help individual patients.

HARI SREENIVASAN: And that’s different because we’re used to clinical trials that are one drug at a time or one gene at a time.

DR. MARK KRIS: Exactly...

The cure for Cancer has been “right around the corner” now for as long as I can remember.

I believe there are many more variables and complexities involved than anyone really understands, so they just ‘poison’ people with Chemotherapy, hoping that the Cancer will die before the patient does. At least that’s how my lowly mind sees it.

Then after curing Cancer, the increased population will hasten the effect of “Peak Oil” and the threat of Global Warming.

Cancer is not elusive, only the ‘attempts’ by Big Pharma to ‘cure’ it. And the Oncologists are right in tune with Big Pharma. Lung Cancer can be treated successfully, and cures can be effected by non-conventional, alternative treatments.

I'm a living testament to improving cures for cancer. Some cancers respond better to treatment than others—for these cancers, we're light years ahead of where we were. To those not yet enlightened, it must seem like chemo is simply poisoning the patient. But research has developed many effective, targeted treatments with fewer side effects. Cancer is no longer an automatic death sentence.

Very good news. Let’s hope more and more cancer is studied and eventual cure. This is one area that I don’t mind having money spent. Can you imagine if we were still trying to control cancer with 1950’s medical treatments. Shutter to even think.

30 or 40 years ago most people that had cancer were dead within five years. That is no longer true. I know several people that had serious cancers that are still alive and doing fine. Thirty years ago they would have been lucky to last a year.

I have learned that one of the reasons people live longer than five years after diagnosis is because they are able to find these cancers which may have lain dormant for ten/fifteen years before they were ever found years ago.

When I was a young x-ray tech in the late fifties,and worked the night shift the pathologists would invite me down to the lab when they were doing autopsies,they (two) of them and the only two that invited me to watch both said that if one did a complete autopsy on folks in their sixties and older,they were sure to find four or five cancers that had encapsulated themselves and never bothered the person. I have found this substantiated through the years in different studies.
