Venezuela unrest: Fresh violence erupts in Caracas

Fresh violence has erupted in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, between police and opponents of President Nicolas Maduro.

Masked protestors burned effigies of the president after a rally called "Resurrection of Democracy".

Police responded to petrol bombs in the Chacao district with tear gas and water cannon.....

On Sunday the rally started with a "Via Crucis" march, mirroring Jesus's walk to crucifixion.

"We're staying in the street until we get our country back," student leader Djamil Jassir, 22. told Reuters news agency.

Another protestor, Naybeth Ramirez, said: "There are many who have already died and it's for them that we're here. They're not going to have an Easter again, nor carnival."

Later, several hundred protestors set up barricades in Chacao, in the east of the capital, changing "Liberty" and throwing petrol bombs.....

They should send in Sean Penn to talk to them and tell them how good they have it...

The people in the streets know they are losing everything they had, everything they have now and everything they could have in the future.

We’re really close to this. Don’t let them take our guns before it happens.

I like all the government’s new AK-74’s. I wonder where they got those. Maduro is out of office by June. Dead or in Russia.

The folks in Venezuela are getting desperate now and perhaps the regime drove them there to create the situation that Maduro cam blame on the opposition.

But the food, medical supplies, diapers and TP are all running out and the truth is coming home just like it did in all countries that have gone Communist since Russia in 1918.

That’s one thing that would change the dynamics in Venezuela right now.

An armed opposition could very well be a victorious opposition.

Notice the leftist spin — not “protests”, but violence. Jihadists blow themselves up and kill 20 people, now THERE’S a protestor.

Good to see Christian influences at the forefront of the anti-government rallies. May God be with you.

” Hard to feel sorry for these people. They voted for it.”

Not so certain that they voted for it. I remember that there were lots of rigged elections during Hugo Chavez's regime. Of course, Jimmy Carter and Sean Penn, would deny this. But, the religious faction of the Venezuelan population has always opposed the Chavez Communists.

The words you use are the same words that people threw at all the Germans when Hitler took over with is goons and Brown Shirts. It is easy to criticize folks who are under the thumbs of totalitarian dictators. OYOH, in the USA - we ought to know better; If it were not for the leftist press in our country, the Democrats would not win any elections. But, the atheistic intelligent at our colleges and universities are brainwashing all out young people, and they have taken over nearly every segment of our society.

No. I don’t feel sorry for Americans.

We voted for it too.

I’m a big believer that people should get what they want.

Maybe one day people will be smart enough to learn. But I’m not holding my breath.

I could have told you what was coming the first time Hugo was elected (and the elections were still kinda free).

I could have told you what was coming the first time Hitler was elected (and the elections were still kinda free).

I could have told you what was coming the first time Obama was elected (and the elections were still kinda free).

If a complete dumbass like me can look at this and figure out what is going to happen next, surely the great geniuses who sit on their ass and talk down to me every time one of these dictators appears should be able to make a semi accurate prediction of what is going to happen next.

You voted for it Venezuela:
You voted for it Germany:
You voted for it America:

Now you can all shut the Hell up!

Some did, many did not. The protests are centered in the places that never voted for Chavez or Maduro.

Well, you’ve got a point about America.

I guess I feel more sorry for Venezuela than us, though.

You can’t compare the CENTURIES of Biblical worldview that America has whizzed down the toilet.

Venezuela has less of a heritage and inheritance to squander than we did, IMHO.

“It is easy to criticize folks who are under the thumbs of totalitarian dictators.”

I think it's a mix of multiple factors that led to where Venezuela is now. I am a stalwart believer in personal freedom and the ability of individuals to live as individuals and self-determine. That, to me, is the essence of American greatness (or at least was).

I don't know all of the reasons it occurred, but Venezuela accumulated a sizable portion of their populace who felt justified in voting for confiscatory government. Letting class warfare and rhetoric fester leads to this. Having an economy that doesn't provide sufficient opportunity for betterment to those lower on the socioeconomic ladder encourages this. Having a left-leaning complicit press encourages this, and accumulating a sizable portion of the populace who have become dependent upon government handouts also encourages this.

This should sound familiar, and then add in the effects of rapid demographic shifts because of legal and illegal immigration and you see why we are in trouble.

Mexico, IMHO, is also ripe for socialist takeover. Pemex, their major source of government funding is facing decreasing petroleum production. They don't provide enough economic opportunity to their own citizens. They have high level political corruption and ‘fat cats’. They can't even police some of their own territories. If I were in the CIA I would be looking at what foreign powers are at work trying to foment this type of unrest in Mexico. You know they are there.

The bottom line is that preservation of freedom requires vigilance, and we aren't impervious to what has happened elsewhere.

Don't forget population pressure.

Even the most minimal improvements in public health ... clean water ... sewers ... inoculation, etc., lead to immediate massive population growth among the lower classes. Then, there are never enough resources to either find something to do for them, or to support them.

In Latin America, this means an increasing racial division as well, since the upper and middle classes are more "European" than the much faster-breeding lower classes. Although there is much intermarriage in Latin society, which does not have our brand of "race consciousness," racial differences do exist and are exacerbated by massive population growth.

Castro took advantage of this by forcing Cuba's middle and upper classes to self-deport, making Cuba much more of an Afro-Latino country than it had been. Venezuela is undergoing that process right now.
