From my understanding, this guy was shooting car to car.
One of the pieces of evidence against him was a bullet hole in his own car, from the inside out.

He tried to claim he was a victim of the sniper as well, with the bullet hole as an alibi.

There were a bunch of other things he said when he should have kept his mouth shut that not only implicated him, but showed that he was one big dummass.

If I may add a note of dread here, here’s an LA Times article that wants us to believe that any and every privacy-invading technology we regularly protest here was used to find him.

It began with one person who knew he had been up to no good, wrote down his license plate. In the old days, that would be one call to the DMV to get the address, then a knock on the door. Not today, you Fourth Amendment cavemen!:

“Investigators plugged the plate number into a database for license-plate readers. ... In this case, a search for the plate number revealed several hits from 2013, when readers had scanned the plate on vehicles parked in front of an address in Grandview, according to court documents.”

“Police quickly identified the driver as Whitaker, according to court documents. Using specialized search databases, they tracked down his current home address and found data that linked his phone bill to the old address where the license plate had been spotted by scanners months earlier.”

“In addition to requesting an emergency “ping” from Sprint to locate Whitaker’s cellphone...”

Reports are that he would “case” his victims by pacing them in their blindspot. Maybe he was “profiling” them as well.

Edward Whitaker, the suspect's father, told Fox 4 KC that his son is "not the highway shooter." He also told 41 Action News' Mitch Weber that if Mohammed Whitaker is the shooter, he must not have acted alone.

Actually, he and his daddy knew each other.
His dad said that Mo’ called him a week before to ask for money.

Local talk show had a lot of the “dish” info on this case somehow.

They were calling him “Mohammed Pedro Runs-with-bears Whitaker”.

Well - he isn't a Tea Party member from Kansas like they hoped, so this will be reported on as little as possible.

Maybe they can find out if he was home schooled or sent money to Prop 8 or something, and then he can be the rage of all the news .
