U.S. Supreme Court upholds Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld Michigan's controversial ban on affirmative action in public college admissions in a divided opinion released Tuesday morning, preserving a status quo that's contributed to dwindling minority enrollment at the state's flagship colleges.

The high court's decision is a blow to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, which has come under fire for low minority enrollment.

Blacks comprise just 4.6 percent of undergraduates this year, compared to 8.9 percent in 1995 and 7 percent in 2006.

University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman and admissions director Ted Spencer have decried the affirmative action ban, saying outright that the school cannot achieve a fully diverse student body with it in place.

"It's impossible," Spencer said in a recent interview, "to achieve diversity on a regular basis if race cannot be used as one of many factors."

Fifty-eight percent of Michigan voters in 2006 passed Proposal 2, a ballot initiative that amended the state constitution and made it illegal for state entities to consider race in admissions and hiring. With the Supreme Court's ruling, the only way left to nullify Proposal 2 is to mount a long, expensive and uncertain campaign to overturn it.

“It’s impossible,” Spencer said in a recent interview, “to achieve diversity on a regular basis if race cannot be used as one of many factors.”

EVERY INDIVIDUAL IS A UNIQUE UNIVERSE IN HIMSELF.

EVERYONE IS ALREADY 100% DIVERSE FROM EVERY OTHER INDIVIDUAL.

That’s our God-given individuality.

We are not clones as part of a group.

We are not numbers, we have individual names.

(end rant)

Controversial? Really?

Push-back against Leftist causes is always “controversial,” even when a majority of the public and, in this case, a strong majority of the Court agrees that affirmative discrimination is wrong.

They were trying a new trick here in NYS. 80% of our prisoners were black (60%) or Latino (20%) (approx.).

:Cuomo said they should get a free college education while in prison.

New Yorkers weren't too happy about that idea.

Anyways, with Obama's new plan...half of them will be back on the streets soon....doing their same old dirty.

The really good news is it was 6-2.

Let me guess, it was the two remaining hags, right?

And if Sandra Day O'Connor had been there, it would have been 3.

2043? This nation won’t even exist in anywhere near it’s present form by then.

GOOD.

AA has consequences, real consequences for those who are passed over in favor of the lesser qualified.

What about them? Why don't they matter?

I well know the consequences, I saw it in my own home when my daughter applied for colleges and saw those far below her in class ranking and test scores get accepted -- with full rides-- to colleges to which she had been rejected.

No one cares about the ones who are shut out. They don't matter to cultural marxists like Coleman and Spence; only racial head counts, not matter how unfair and unjust.

Actually a 6-2 dicision (one recusal) with this court is not that divided.

Right. It's a strong decision. Calling it divided is commie journalism.

By 2019 half of the children 18 and under will be minorities as defined by the USG, and by 2043 we will be a majority-minority country.

Only if they count George Zimmerman as non-white.

Who cares? The school exists to EDUCATE, not foster "diversity". Ted Spencer and Mary Sue Coleman must be brain damaged.

“University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman and admissions director Ted Spencer have decried the affirmative action ban, saying outright that the school cannot achieve a fully diverse student body with it in place.”

They seem to think that diversity is their primary objective.

So UofMI would rather have academically under-qualified students so they can brag of their diversity? Does that make sense at all?

Doesn’t MI have a number of less competitive, non “public Ivy,” colleges beyond UofMI ? Something wrong with going there?

In VA, as it turns out, grads of state school, George Mason Univ, do as well as - and better financially than - grads of the state’s “public Ivies,” WIlliam and Mary and UVA.

Just looked at the NY SLIMES article on the decision....it spent MOST of the space allotted quoting the LOWER COURT OPINIONS and judicial makeup....NOT the Supremes’ decision.
