Self-funder poised to win GOP nod for Trey Radel seat [Special Election primary today]

Republican voters in a southwest Florida congressional district will go to the polls Tuesday to pick a likely successor to former Rep. Trey Radel, the freshman Republican who resigned in January after pleading guilty to cocaine possession.

Without stark policy disagreements among the GOP candidates — and without the bellwether status of the Sunshine State’s 13th District, where a closely contested special election last month riveted national political watchers — Tuesday’s primary vote in the 19th District will test the sway of campaign cash and endorsements from political heavyweights such as Rand Paul and Sarah Palin.

The four-way Republican race in the soundly red district attracted more than $2 million in outside spending and more than $3.5 million in self-funding, and left locals disconcerted by a barrage of negative campaigning.

“This has taken a very personal tone, this race,” said Lee County Republican Chairman Terry Miller in a phone interview. “When there isn’t a lot to differentiate the candidates on policy, they’ve gone to other aspects to try to articulate why they’re the best person to vote for.”

With 38 percent of likely voters’ support, Curt Clawson led the primary field heading into the final weekend before the special primary, according to an automated survey from the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling, conducted for the Fort Myers News-Press and the city’s CBS affiliate, WINK-TV.

The manufacturing executive and former Purdue basketball player dubbed himself “the outsider” of the race and put at least $3.4 million into his campaign. Some of that money went to a local TV ad that aired during the Super Bowl, featuring Clawson shooting hoops.

I read all sorts of newspapers and sources, and have the ability to form opinions on their angle or bias all on my own. Feel free to not click on the link.

You are correct. And you are smart. And I clicked on the link and read the poorly written, biased article. But your response is too pat, too glib, and I think you could have found a useful report on the news story to post from a source other than Politico. Did you try? Did you consider this is a conservative website and folks here have a different outlook than do writers of Politico?

Either Curt Clawson or Lizbeth Benacquisto would be acceptable as I recall. I personally am rooting for Benacquisto, Sarah Palin’s pick.
