Obama will burn more than 35,000 gallons of fuel on Earth Day...

...Obama is marking the 44th Earth Day with a carbon-emitting extravaganza...According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the statistics arm of the Department of Energy, burning each gallon emits 21.1 pounds of carbon dioxide, bringing the president's Earth Day carbon footprint to more than 375.7 tons....Air Force One, the president's private Boeing 747, burns about 5 gallons of jet fuel per minute, a rate that would have the typical car stranded halfway to the grocery store

Boeing's specifications for its 747 aircraft, which serves as Air Force One, include an estimate for fuel consumption of 5 gallons per mile. Tuesday's presidential travel will span more than 7,100 miles over two continents.– more than one-quarter of the way around the earth.

Sikorsky, whose HV-3d Sea King helicopter flew Obama from the White House to Andrews Air Force Base, burns an additional 176.7 gallons of fuel per hour, requiring more than 44 gallons – about four times the size of a modern economy car's fuel tank – for the estimated 15-minute trip.

A White House pool reporter noted that Marine One' landing on the South Lawn of the White House 'caused a flurry of hundreds of tree flower petals.'

While I agree with the basic premise, I’m sorry, but I have to question the math here. A gallon of jet fuel weighs what, around 7lbs. How the heck do you get 21.1 lbs of emissions from something that weighs 7lbs?

Thanks, I did the math in my head and something didn’t add up so was going to post the same question...

That's more fuel than I burn in 20 years, gasoline and heat combined.
I'm not going to feel guilty anymore.

We must also factor in the methane emitted by his wife.

Probably cheaper and easier for all concerned when you factor in the motorcade, blocked and idling traffic, and search of the route beforehand. 44 gallons is the tank size of my Suburban, so to fly that big old bird for 15 minutes on that isn't all that bad IMHO.

Don't really know, but here is the page from Obama's own Clowns at the EPA:

They combined the weight of the O2 with the C, now I get it.

I don’t know for sure, but you are changing molecules made up of carbon and hydrogen into molecules made up of carbon and (much heavier) oxygen. If I had the molecular formula for aviation fuel I could tell you if the math is right, but I don’t find it surprising at all.

I should have said jet fuel is basically kerosene, avgas is gasoline.

That’s “Imperial Gallons”

So to us Americans, it’s 42,033.2658 gallons.

Osama Obama is responsible for more CO2 emissions in one day than I've been responsible for so far in my entire life.

Very roughly, AF1 burns 5 gal/min which equals 93.5 moles of jet fuel. A balanced equation would show that every 2 moles of jet fuel produce 12 moles of carbon dioxide, so the 5 gal of jet fuel produce 561 moles of carbon dioxide (assuming 100% efficiency, having all the oxygen necessary...). Those moles come out to 54.41 pounds of carbon dioxide. Considering the low oxygen content at the altitude the plane was flying, I think 21.1 pounds of carbon dioxide sound just right! And no engine, not even in Air force One, is 100% effective.

You must keep in mind that burning fuel is a chemical reaction, between the fuel and oxygen. In a chemical reaction you don't compare pound to pound but rather mole to mole (where a mole is an Avogadro's number of molecules).

It is really interesting, I think I will keep the information and use it in my next chemistry class! That should make the point to the students! Thank you.
