Handguns Stolen From HS Locker Room During LAPD, SDPD Football Game

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Police confirm guns and badges were stolen from a high school locker room in Boyle Heights during an officers’ charity football game.

A LAPD football team was playing officers from San Diego Saturday at Salesian High School when someone got into the locker room and rifled through the gym bags of the San Diego officers.

Detectives say three handguns were taken along with jewelry, watches and badges.

There was no sign of forced entry, leading detectives to think the locker room door was mistakenly left open.

The investigation is ongoing.

Dumb cops, I don’t suppose they will be charged under California’s Gun Laws, will they?

It’s only against the law for YOU to not safely secure your firearms...

I think this story exposes what the real agenda is, disarm citizens of their right to protect themselves.

Locker room theft (at high school stadiums) seems to happen every football season around here. I guess everybody is so excited about the game nobody is paying attention to the lockers.

It’s always a big cache of smartphones, iPads, etc.

I wonder why the LAPD guys didn’t have any of their possessions stolen?

A high school locker room where boys get to lock up their clothing but police officers don't get to lock their guns?

Whoever planned this is responsible along with the creeps who committed the thievery.

Locked or not, a locker room door does NOT constitute secure storage. Sidearms should have at the very least been placed in a padlocked gym locker, and access to the area controlled by a guard during the event.

Exactly. Why was there not a policeman stationed outside the locker rooms? That, or leave your weapons at home.

Because there were so many on the football field, they thought, “What could go wrong!?!”

This is why cops should not be trusted with firearms! I would never leave a gun in a gym bag in a locker room. When I get my oil changed, I take the gun out of the car even though I have eyes on the car the during the whole oil change.

Guns are like SUVs, they have a mind of their own and the PoPo just figured those
guns would guard themselves. I mean, really, they are Guns.

I know several...one retired at 50 and went and purchased a 45 acre ranch. He now has to find a way to get by on $80,000 a year on his government retirement pension.

Bishop Mora Salesian High School - a boys Catholic high school, college prep, heavily Hispanic area.

This sounds similar to Catholic schools I’ve encountered and I’ve had more stuff stolen from Catholic campuses than any other places. You’d be surprised who does it - gardeners, janitors, handymen, etc. are the more usual suspects than the kids; at least this is my experience.

I had a semi-girlfriend many years ago that I was sharing with a San Diego cop. One day she absconded with a gun she obtained from his apartment. She was at large with it for most of a day before he located her and got it back. Police were not alerted. He called me to ask if I knew where she was. I didn’t.

Criminal Storage
“Criminal storage of firearm of the first degree” – Keeping any loaded firearm within any premises
that are under your custody or control and you know or reasonably should know that a child (any
person under 18) is likely to gain access to the firearm without the permission of the child’s
parent or legal guardian and the child obtains access to the firearm and thereby causes death or
great bodily injury to himself, herself, or any other person . (Pen . Code, § 25100, subd . (a) .)

“Criminal storage of firearm of the second degree” – Keeping any loaded firearm within any premises
that are under your custody or control and you know or reasonably should know that a child (any
person under 18) is likely to gain access to the firearm without the permission of the child’s
parent or legal guardian and the child obtains access to the firearm and thereby causes injury,
other than great bodily injury, to himself, herself, or any other person, or carries the firearm
either to a public place or in violation of Penal Code section 417 . (Pen . Code, § 25100, subd .
(b) .)

Or Locked in their trunks, my understanding is LAPD purchased secure storage in the back of every cruiser to prevent this sort of thing.

I can’t find the link, but I saw these bolted safes where you put the pistol barrel onto a rod and pulled back the receiver to latch it into place. Once on there, the key is removable and your pistol is secure.

I certainly hope the local authorities remember the “Criminal Storage” provisions of the law should any destructive use of the stolen firearms occur.

On a happier note, at least the low IQ law enforcement officers made it home safely. And that’s the most important thing.
