Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond and UK Prime Minister David Cameron will use St George's Day to make pleas ahead of the independence referendum.

Voters in Scotland go to the polls on 18 September.

Mr Cameron said Scotland should remain united with England in the "world's greatest family of nations".

Mr Salmond will tell an audience in Carlisle that an enduring friendship would remain between England and Scotland after a "Yes" vote.

I can’t imagine a lot of Scottish liking Cameron much - he probably would have been better keep his gob shut!

It’s a day when towns and villages across the county should be festooned with the simple red cross of the flag of our patron saint, St George.

But if speaking to people on the streets of one county town is anything to go by, you would be fairly hard pressed to find anyone who will be celebrating today – or even why April 23 is a significant date.

A PATRIOTIC Kemsing resident has bemoaned the lack of St George’s Day cards available in Sevenoaks. Simon Crowley, Childsbridge Lane, said he attempted to buy cards in the town centre but left empty-handed.

Bring out the bunting. There's lots to celebrate on St George's Day, we have the world's most expensive capital city, air we can barely breathe, soaring child poverty and a massive drink and drug problem. If you can bear it, here's 10 reasons not to be patriotic.

St George's Day: 10 Reasons To Feel Patriotic About Being English
The Queen, fish and chips, cups of tea and Stephen Fry. Great reasons to be proud of being British. But is that really all we've got. Actually, there's a lot better reasons to be proud of being British. We're one of the most tolerant, most compassionate and progressive places on Earth.

4. St George is thought to have been a soldier in the Roman army who was martyred for his Christian beliefs, though some doubts have been expressed about whether he existed at all.

5. Because of these doubts, Pope Paul VI demoted St George to ‘optional worship’ in 1969.

6. John Paul II reinstated him to full membership of the calendar of saints in 2000.
