Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) believes the country's illegal immigrants should be given work visas and be allowed to remain in the United States.
The potential 2016 presidential contender spoke at the Institute of Politics at the University of Chicago on Tuesday and told David Axelrod, President Barack Obama's former top adviser who now heads the institute, that he did not vote for the Senate's comprehensive immigration reform bill. He did not do so because it did not grant enough work visas in the agricultural and construction industries. The Congressional Budget Office determined that bill would lower the wages of American workers.
When Axelrod asked him what he would do with the country's illegal immigrants, Paul said, "I'd expand the work visa program to include them."
In addition to his support for this form of amnesty, Paul said he was for "allowing a lot of immigration" but realized that the United States could not "invite the whole world." He noted that "700 million people would come" if America had open borders.
Paul said illegal immigrants who may be given an opportunity to get citizenship or legalization should not have to return to their home countries....

What an idiot.
11 to 20 million more workers to compete legally for American jobs. Any legislation that allows the lawbreakers to stay and work here is amnesty. Rand Paul supports amnesty.
How about we just cut off all the freebies.
Isn’t defense of borders a tenet of libertarianism? If so, then Rand is full-on liberal here.
WHEN THERE IS NO WORK WHAT THE HELL DIFFERENCE DOES IT
The old “bracero” program worked pretty well in California, and allowed us to track those who had temporary work visas. Picking grapes or lettuce is back breaking work, and I can see how it would be mutually beneficial to use people who have no problem with this type of labor.
It’s a whole lot better than our current open borders, and the subsequent drain on “entitlements” that come right out of our pockets, with zero control over illegals.
That is a smart proposal. Follow Singapore’s example. It is the most prosperous country per capita in SE Asia. They have no food stamps program, no unemployment compensation program and low corporate tax. Result is they have more jobs than citizens which number 3.5 million.
So what is Singapore’s immigration program?
There are 2 million foreign workers on 2 year work permits in Singapore. They must return after 2 years are up and then re-apply for another work permit.
The work permit system tells Singapore who is there, where they work, and where they live. Unlike USA which has no clue who is here and what the heck they are doing.
In 2006 I was talking with a Mexican painter in Alabama who was working for a large Atlanta company and earning $4 an hour. He said if he could get work in Mexico he would rather go home. I just heard a report today that Mexicans are being arrested while trying to leave the country, with no contraband or criminal warrents outstanding, being forced to serve time and then deported. I guess we taxpayers just have to keep the Prison/Industrial Complex well paid and supplied with bodies!!
They’d get visas then go directly on the government dole (if they aren’t on it already for their kids and other stuff).
I’ve had about enough of these clowns. Nothing like legitimizing people who are giving you the finger and your laws. Oh I forgot. It’s an act of love. What a bunch of spineless morons.
“How about we just cut off all the freebies”
Now there you go being logical. How about fining employers?
I hate to say this, but I think we are sunk. The stupid Pubs think this a great idea that will get them votes. Yo Quiro, Taco Bell
Actually no. Libertarians believe in the free flow of labor across borders.
“On one hand, we must remain firm; on the other, let’s be flexible: We can expect 700 million hungry invaders, if we have open borders, but we can employ them all on huge pot farms.
“All we need is love, love—love is all we need. Is this the Chamber of Commerce or League of Homo Voters, I forget.”
Conan Paul the barbalibertarian
So much for them being defense hawks. All doubletalk.
I know, they screw the people often for then of thousands on false tax returns with the child credit.
Rand Paul has declared war on unemployed legal Americans. Paul has staked out a position of supporting law breaking ILLEGAL ALIENS over unemployed legal citizens. What a moronic turd. Hope all you LIBERALtarians are happy with your poor excuse for a human being.
Yeah, you just keep telling yourself that crap. And soon you’ll be believing that Obama isn’t such a bad guy after all.
Whatever is proposed is absolutely worthless without enforcement. That’s the real problem.
So we create a work permit system, and then what? Think we’re going to deport those who overstay their work visas? We don’t do that now. What if employers would rather keep their illegal labor off the books in order to pay less and undercut their competition? The incentives that currently make illegal alien labor profitable would still exist. What if the illegals themselves don’t want to participate? Maybe they don’t want to become Americans and pay taxes.
Again, no plan is going to work if the federal government will not enforce the law. You cannot offer a carrot if you aren’t also willing to use the stick, and there’s no will in DC to do that.
And risk the ire of Presidente de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos! God forbid we do anything to protect our sovereignty and the rightful citizens of the United States of America, no, no we must bow to the demands of a foreign power that refuses to treat invaders of its borders the same way it demands we treat Mexican invaders of our borders.
Obama-Reid-Pelosi triumvirate will never enforce any laws detrimental to democrats. You are right on that.
Note that there is no such word as DINO in democrat vocabulary. Democrats always support other democrats regardless of differences.
I vacationed in Singapore a month ago. The infrastructure is better than anything I saw in US. It is easy for them to enforce immigration laws. You can not enter and reside in the country unless you have a 2 year work permit. SO they know at all times where you are and where you work.
“In 2006 I was talking with a Mexican painter in Alabama who was working for a large Atlanta company and earning $4 an hour...”
Multiply that by n-million, and you have the decline in wages that we have seen.
“The old bracero program worked pretty well in California,”
I thought it worked well too. I worked along side them in the 60s and remember being shocked the 1st time I saw a Border Patrol plane fly over and a bunch of Mexicans run to hide.
A whole different attitude then as they were afraid to break our laws and get caught.
Another interesting tidbit from Singapore...
There are signposts everywhere saying “Singapore has death penalty for drug dealers”. People I met told me there is no drug problem in Singapore.
Not one dime’s worth of difference.
He’s so dead to me it’s as though he’s died a hundred times.
That’s how to do it.
The Libertarian Party platform wants totally open borders. “Come on in”!
Get a lot of this thread.
It’s late and I should preview.
Get a load of this thread.
Eliminate all welfare in the US and anything that stinks like welfare.
Then Americans will be happy to do ag jobs and other labor for money, so they can eat and buy shoes to wear.
The reason Americans “won’t do” this kind of labor is because they’d rather get welfare or sell drugs.
Execute drug dealers and eliminate welfare. Plenty of Americans would soon be overjoyed to pick tomatoes and mow grass.
I also noticed that the LP is averse to “acting as policeman for the world” on its platform. Well, you abandon that and you’ll have someone who will take the job willingly to the ends of expanding its reach globally in an imperial sense.
“Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) believes the country’s illegal immigrants should be given work visas and be allowed to remain in the United States. “
Another fool who puts the interests of foreign national lawbreakers first.
Vacuum of power never lasts long.
Do you think that all these tens and tens, and tens and tens of millions of illegals over the last few decades have been coming here to pick some grapes and lettuce?
Where do you live where you haven’t noticed them taking over all blue collar work?
I will now turn my attention to Cruz, until he says similar things, if ever.
What an idiot.
In the past few months, Rand Paul has destroyed any chance he had at being a nominee for Prez. The guy has proven himself to be as nutty as his dad when it comes to politics.
I don’t understand why he is still being presented as “a TEA Party favorite” by the media. He has lost Conservatives.
In the last two weeks Paul has basically come out for homosexual marriage, illegal immigration, and pro-choice.
I think prior to this lunacy he had a good shot at the GOP nomination, but not anymore.
Bingo. You can make any program work if you enforce the rules. Critics always use the straw man, “We can’t deport 12 million illegals.” But we don’t have to, any more than we have to arrest every speeder on the interstate to enforce speed limits. If you deport SOME and make it very public and energetically work to enforce the laws, the rest get the message.
Personally, I support “work papers” for illegals (the ones that really WANT TO WORK).
Wish we had some around here that WANT TO WORK versus the locals who live off the rest of us and use the system.
How about Rand Paul ending welfare for able-bodied men and women and forcing them to get off their worthless asses and work in the fields, clean the streets and do other things that actually help society.
No, we can’t do that. We must import workers from south of the border so that those welfare bums can live in the lifestyle they have become accustomed to.
However, Rand Paul is fully aware of the fact that if he presses the issue loud enough the “brown” voter base will be fully behind him....especially if he voices his political speeches in Spanish.
Rand Paul has been over the top lately. He’s effectively eliminated himself from my potential candidate list.
“Where do you live where you havent noticed them taking over all blue collar work?”
I live in the belly of the beast, the San Francisco Bay Area. Yes, I deeply resent the economic impact of illegals here, California has 12% of the population and 30% of the nation’s welfare caseload. My property taxes and state income taxes are astronomical, all we are working for is to support the welfare cases.
My comment about the bracero program was targeted at the manual labor of picking crops. These were temporary workers, tracked, and made to go back home after the harvest season. A very far cry from the invasion we’ve had to endure from spineless politicians who cave to political pressure instead of upholding the rule of law.
Obviously, the GOP-e has impressed upon him that it is better to care about Mexican invaders than it is to care about Americans. You can get more donations from the corporate scum that way.
