Naval Base Security Alert Prompted by Sailor Playing with Air Soft Pistol

A sailor playing with an air soft gun inside a Navy barracks prompted an alert

A sailor playing with an air soft gun inside a Navy barracks prompted a security response and shelter-in-place order on Naval Base Point Loma, Navy officials confirmed to NBC 7 Thursday.

Base Commanding Officer Scott Adams described the suspect as "a young, enlisted sailor" who lives on base.

"He was actually firing shots of the air soft pistol out of the window toward a mirror in the parking lot," Adams said.

A tenant of the base called security personnel and reported an armed person around 10 a.m.

In response, a portion of the base was ordered to “shelter in place” as naval security forces and NCIS set up a perimeter around the barracks.

The suspect and a friend inside the barracks called their commanding officer once they realized NCIS had been called.

The two were taken into custody without incident.

"We are dealing with young sailors and we inform them what is and is not appropriate but at some times, these things happen," Adams said.

Weapons are not permitted in the barracks, Adams said. However, it's unclear if an air soft pistol is considered a weapon under that policy.

San Diego police said their Emergency Negotiations Team, consisting of police, FBI agents and NCIS officials, was requested to assist base officials.

There are dozens of commands located at the facility tucked away on the penninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay.

Among them are Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) and seven submarines.

How long before they start calling swat to school playgrounds whenever a kid has a water gun?

Air-Soft guns are toys. I bought one the other day to scare ducks away from my fish pond. ...Bad investment. This was a fully automatic toy that ran on batteries and was supposedly 300 FPS.

At 25 feet, no question that I hit both of them and they just looked at me as if to say “who the hell are you?” And walked away.

There is just something so screwed about having call someone about someone armed on a military base.

I have a worksite at NBPL & am well acquainted with that area of the sub base (former Navy/Navy Reserve 24 yrs) — sounds like the knothead & his buddy were firing from their barracks window at one of the convex mirrors installed around the winding roads & for exiting parking lots with blind views. Idiot maneuver, and their LCPO / CMC / COB should be able to handle it, but it's made the news. NJP at best, or court martial at worst for the pair. Ironically, a firearms training range is nearby on the base, and it often sounds like downtown Chicago on a Friday night.

I’m sure it’s already in “their” contingency plans.

I worked for a contractor tearing down the old receiving barracks on PI. One of the duty hut walls was loading with .45 cal slugs. What a scary night that must have been for some recruits. My, how much has changed.

I think it was in “Goodbye Darkness” that the author tells a story of a jr DI disguised as a recruit who is shot by the senior DI with blanks, unbeknownst to the real recruits. The senior looks left and right and orders the recruits to throw the body in the dumpster and marches the platoon off. That DI probably never had a bit of trouble with that platoon.

If this goes to the court martial level the Navy has succumbed to complete idiocy.
