Montanans, Alaskans Say States Among Top Places to Live

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- When asked to rate their state as a place to live, three in four Montanans (77%) and Alaskans (77%) say their state is the best or one of the best places to live. Residents of Rhode Island (18%) and Illinois (19%) are the least likely to praise their states.

And of course, there's Texas!

Although Texas trails Montana and Alaska in terms of its residents rating it as the best or one of the best places to live, it edges out Alaska (27%) and Hawaii (25%) in the percentage of residents who rate it as the single best place to live.

Texans' pride for their state as the single best place to live is not surprising when viewed in the context of other measures. According to Gallup Daily tracking for 2013, Texans rank high on standard of living and trust in their state government, and they are less negative than others are about the state taxes they pay.

The only reason I’m not planing to retire to AK is that it is missing a couple of things. No pheasants and no lightning storms (at least not near Anchorage). I didn’t realize about the lightning thing until I got back to the lower 48 and heard a night time storm moving in.... But I have to have pheasants.

My long time dream has always been of having an aviary and raise pheasants, among other birds.

If I lived in Montana or Alaska, I certainly wouldn’t report how great it is there, can you imagine the number of Kalifornia’ns that will be flocking to their states, thus bringing all their liberal agendas? It happened in Colorado(I lived there and we see the evidence of what the migration brought), Oregon, Washington, and many other states to their liking. Indeed we all have a right to live where we choose.

Too hot, humid in Texas, and I used to live in Houston when I was younger, was not impressed, never went jobless but jobs never paid a lot in wages.

Been in Alaska for 22 years, wages much better but you have to face specific challenges such as weather cold extremes or seasonal work, but still aside from that in comparison I did more, made more, owned much much more than when I lived it Texas plus never a hurricane or a cockroach to be seen.

Or snakes.

Alaska IS better but who cares? Its too far away to be of any social value, let Texas be the trendy winner.

Alaska has a very positive long term future concerning resource development. They are also financially secure and I doubt you will ever see the taxes people in lower 48 consider normal & acceptable. Conservative/Libertarian area that will never see gun control.

I luv Alaska for many things, hunting, miles and miles of wild open country, no taxes, the live and let live attitude of what a man does in his own home is his own business, but the big one is FREEDOM like I've never seen anywhere else. Of course we live rural along the Yukon in an unorganized borough that lacks all the local government everybody else thinks is just normal. No ordinances, Comp Planning, property taxes, any taxes for that matter and nearest Law enforcement is 200 miles away; now that's real freedom. 80% White, 20% Indian, everybody is armed, hasn't been a murder around here in over 30 years.

We've been here over 20 years too, only regret is I wish I had moved to Alaska when I was 18.

For every 3 people who move to Alaska, 2 of them can't wait until the road opens come Spring and head back South. They show up in the Spring with all these dreams & plans; totally demoralized a year later. Alaska ain't for everybody. You have to have the skills to survive, that many people lack. I constantly wonder how I put up with life back East the first half of my life? Alaska is a wonderland for my family.

No, it’s AWFUL here in Montana... It’s all skeeters and grizzly bears and up hill both ways... And there’s only two seasons - ‘Winter’, and ‘Construction’... The water is polluted, the people are nasty, there’s trash everywhere, and it continually smells like somebody farted. The only reason we are here is because we are all too broke to move...

Yeah, it’s awful in Montana. And Idaho. And Wyoming. Best go find someplace else, k?

Two winters ago it was -65 degrees (that’s real temperature, not wind chill - and it’s not the record). Last year during breakup a wall of water 24 feet high came through our town, ruining literally every home, and destroying about one-third of those. We’ve had one week of above freezing temps, and I got my first mosquito bite last night.

It’s just life in the Alaska Bush. At least you can drive to a Wal-Mart.
