Cliven Bundy could tell you what it’s like to go to sleep as a hero and wake up as a monster; and rightly so on both counts.
The Drudge Report -- which for days assigned the ranch standoff its lead headline -- now links to a Washington Post blog with the Drudge-assigned banner, “Rand Paul, Republicans – RUN!”
Distance themselves, they should, not just because Bundy’s comments are flatly racist,,,His supporters should separate from his cause because his statements go against American ideals on a very basic level.
These comments revolve around the fallacy that slaves could be freer than free persons. Even if the rest of Bundy’s thought process is fair (it’s not) or justifiable (it isn’t), At this core is where the published quotes attributed to the Nevada rancher become the most concerning.
Republicans must distance themselves from the man with the same haste and purpose in which a doctor would remove a gangrenous arm. His comments threaten to taint a movement. His quoted opinions become a weapon to be used against a party with which had just been making headlines for its desire to improve minority outreach. Proper conservatives believe in the value of each individual in very clear terms, but the world will never accept such truths if individuals like Cliven continue to weigh down their message.
The frank truth is that the minorities that he referenced in his tragic racism may spend their lives as takers from the government (simply restating his supposition), but none of them can be accused of living off of government resources and then failing to pay the millions that they owe for it. Who was the drag on our system again, Mr. Bundy?

Bundy is not a racist. He didn’t say anything that Walter Williams and Thomas Sowell haven’t said a million times.

Williams and Sowell have never said blacks were better off under slavery. They have said black families were better off during the Jim Crow era, but that’s hardly the same thing.
Despite the de facto welfare slavery of the Democrat Plantation, even the Pubbies don't want to admit the truth: when they were picking cotton, or hoeing the crops, or harvesting, they worked for the food, housing, clothing, and rudimentary medical care provided--they (perhaps more than) earned their keep or there would have been little point having them around.
Now, stripped of work ethic and sense of achievement, the same things are provided by the government, extracted from their benefactors at gunpoint (or threat thereof), only there is no sense of accomplishment (unless it's 'gettin over on the man'), no sense of self worth, nor work ethic.
There is no way the latter is more beneficial, as generations are being stripped, culturally and socially, of the tools which might lead them to success above and beyond the projects (slave quarters).
Sure, the little cabin has been traded for a nicer (well, sometimes) apartment, or Section 8 housing, and the place is better lit, the chains aren't drab iron, but gold filled, and they can come and go as they please, but it is what it is, regardless of nicer trimmings, and the illusion of 'freedom'.
Far too many are too blind to see it.
Well said. Bundy was as right as rain - his only mistake was in restricting his comments to “the negro”. A slave could have initiative, dignity, and a sense of honor. Regardless of race, the welfare recipient, particularly the multi-generational variety who considers it an “entitlement” have none of that...
The mostly blue states are the Slave States. Those states are owned by the Feral Government and the citizens of those states are the serfs and vassals.

At the end of this year, the Democrats will give Cliven Bundy their Fundraiser of the Year Award.
And for those journalists that don't know the history of the West or bothered to take two minutes to look it up, the finest cotton in the world came from Arizona, with Texas and Oklahoma close behind. Cotton helped build the West as much as cattle did, so it would not be unusual for a seasoned westerner to think of growing and picking cotton as a valid and respectable occupation for the unskilled laborer in the Western states. Only racial knee-jerks and people ignorant of Western agriculture would exclusively associate the phrase “pick cotton” with the South and try to twist it as a racial insult. He also mentioned growing turnips and chickens, which are not an exclusive Southern items, either.
Before his circulated comments, Bundy talked about having witnessed the Watts riots, how he could see blacks were unhappy, that they didn't feel they had any freedoms, and, he acknowledges “they didn't have them”. That "it was wrong", and that he didn't want blacks or hispanics "to go back to that", that we had made progress since then and "we can make a difference right now by taking care of some of the bureaucracy and doing it in a peaceful way."
Then, in what was heralded to be the money shot, he talks about driving by the government projects, and seeing poor blacks with nothing to do and how unhappy they looked sitting there doing nothing, that they were never taught how to get off the dole or given the opportunity to be self-sufficient. In response to an off-camera comment, he acknowledges the fact blacks have physical ‘freedom’ following antebellum days, and acknowledges slavery was wrong, but asks what kind of freedom do poor blacks really have, consigned to government barracks surrounded by concrete, broken families, abortions encouraged, and fatherless children being raised by old people? He asks, as we have all asked, and have heard asked a thousand times in a dozen different ways, has the overall quality of life of poor blacks improved or become worse as wards of the government?
His defense of the hispanic immigrant (many of whom picked cotton as a means to become self-sufficient) is released as a separate tape. While certainly not an eloquent speaker, if one listens carefully to what he says it's obvious he meant no disrespect to any racial group and was, in fact, calling the government to task. imo The ‘Bundy is a Racist’ articles are nothing more than manufactured hysteria.
Bottom line: we all know... we ALL know... that conservatives and right wingers have the entire establishment media against us. We ALL know that.
Bottom line 2: Bundy’s opinions on race and welfare have NOTHING to do with his righteous cause, had no bearing on it whatsoever.
He should have had friends who know better. How can he not have friends who should have urged caution in the face of an evil and hostile media.
Where were his friends when he needed them?
It’s pathetic and sad that there was no one at his side to give him wise counsel.
Bundy was simply trying to indicate that self help is better than government hand outs.
Rand Paul just sounded his own death nell.
Unbelievable. This man has no influence on welfare funding or anything except his own land. He was making rhetorical points, and “conservatives” are distancing themselves from him?
What do they think about his legal dispute?
