Retired Supreme Court justice says marijuana should be legalized

WASHINGTON – Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens says he thinks the federal government should legalize marijuana.

The 94-year-old retired justice tells NPR that public opinion has changed on the issue.

Stevens also says that there isn't much distinction between marijuana and alcoholic beverages.

What the heck is all the pot hype about. This is for people who want to get high? I understand the medical part, but for healthy people to smoke weed to “feel better” amazes me. Heroin next? And where are the anti smoking Nazis when there is a REAL issue. This isn’t theoretical (and bogus) second hand smoke...this is encouraging people to smoke when it has taken us generations to stop. (Stop the world, I want to get off this ride).

No, the initial excuse for them would be gone. But those forces would still be needed by the powers that be... because they like having the control options that come with those forces.

...but not disbanded. They would be re-tasked to other duties like enforcing hate speech laws about queers and muhamheads or taking up your arms. I’d rather they stay on drugs and not move into other areas.

John Paul Stevens should not open his mouth if he does not know what it is he is saying. There are huge and significant differences between alcoholic beverages and marijuana, so many that they cannot be compared.

There are many varieties of alcoholic beverages with a long history of use, thousands of years. Permanent and short term effects are well known, as well as the dangers of excessive consumption.

What are known about the carcinogens, permanent brain alteration, psychotic drug effects, memory loss, and other deleterious effects of marijuana use, are being suppressed or ignored so as not to stop the juggernaut of stupidly legalizing its use.

Already in Colorado there are increases in auto accidents, deaths, hospitalizations, bad effects on children, and maybe an overall dumbing down of the population. We are not living in rationale times.

You are correct; the “need” for the militarized police, or the present justification for them, would go away. But the police themselves would not, and a new justification for their existence would be created.

In fact, the “war on drugs” is in itself proof of this. While marijuana had been illegal before 1935, there had not been much effort to enforce any of the laws. In 1935, all of that changed and the “war on drugs began in earnest. Why then? Because between 1922 and 1933 armies of police had been hired to enforce Prohibition. But in 1933, that justification for their existence was eliminated. The officers needed something to do so “Reefer Madness” was filmed, and the rest is history.

Why ?? almost all mammals do it to some extent... birds too .. they seek out naturally fermented berries, psychedelic fungi and such ... I don’t smoke but if it was legal I would cook with it ,, I don’t need the tar and crap in my lungs ... alcohol even in small quantities makes it hard for me to sleep...

The war on drugs is about power and control.. lets release non-violent drug offenders so they can go out get a job and build our economy.

And, of course, the prison would empty out so much you could probably put prisoners one to a cell so they wouldn’t beat the crap out of each other or do unmentionable things to each other after lights out.

Then you could put more violent thugs in jail, rather than giving them probation.

You would have to be careful with the weed, however. It is a lot more potent than it used to be. One brownie in 2014 might be equal to 10 brownies back in the 1970s.

Absurd letting a bunch of druggies and LAWBREAKERS out so they can "improve society". They are in jail because they broke the law. If you don't like the law, then CHANGE it. No , so they can go back to their jobs and family and not be a burden on YOU and ME... If they’re not hurting anyone or stealing from anyone why hurt them (and us)?

Do get all hung up on laws ,, after all the average person commits 3 FELONIES every day and innumerable misdemeanors .. on the average commute each day 17 traffic laws are broken ,, they make tens of thousands of new laws each year and compliance is literally impossible... YOU CAN’T EVEN NAME THE NEW LAWS IN YOUR STATE MUCH LESS NATIONAL LAWS...
