Russian "Doomsday Plane" Spotted Flying By Finland Border
zero hedge ^ | 4/25/14 | Tyler Durden

Posted on 04/25/2014 1:16:03 PM PDT by Nachum

The last time the Russian "Doomsday Plane" was seen in the air doing its trademark loops at 27,000 feet telegraphing Vladimir Putin was somewhere nearby, was on March 31, just days after the formerly Ukrainian region was annexed by the Kremlin. Until today, when over the past 4 hours, the Tu-214 has been quietly circling in position just shy of Finland and the Baltics, where as it is known, NATO has been depositing hundreds of western soldiers in a "defensive" build up.

I was thinking the same thing.

Most communications/spy planes do not have aerobatic capabilities.

Can you image trying to do a loop in an E2 Hawkeye?

Tu-214SR - Russia's modern version of Looking Glass. Been flying about two years now. They have at least two flying.

Although we tend to think of a plane flying loops in a vertical manner, loops can also be horizontal, flat, like a loop in a river. A circular path.

Dr. Strangelove: Of course, the whole point of a Doomsday Machine is lost, if you *keep* it a *secret*! Why didn't you tell the world, EH?

Russia’s version of the Looking Glass Airborne Command Post.

Two flying now, with another 4 on order. China is supposedly getting some, as well, with their own electronic suite.
Like I’ve said many times, the perception in the west is that this is still Soviet Russia’s military.

It isn’t, and Putin has spent a BUNCH of oil money on upgrades that are just now coming on line, like this, drones, and next-gen fighters.

Rumor mill says that one of these is supposed to make an appearance at Farnsboro.

I’m still working on getting there, but if I do, it’s just been added to my list of must-have pics.

“Loops” whose axis is vertical. Sounds like an AWACS plane.

When I was with TACAMO these were called "orbits".

Holding position with a constant banking turn.

It is nearly trademark for any airborne Command Post.

Loops? Must be a hell of a plane.

Typical incompetent MSM reporting. Those idiots don't know the difference between "loops" and tight circling around a small area.
Oh well, most readers don't know the difference either.

Nope, the more correct term is "orbits".

The Tu-214 is a ripoff of the 757. The difference is it runs on vodka.

Right. But the photo above shows no communications pod or antennas.

Correct, maybe, but, the more descriptive term for the masses would be "flying in circles."

Is there a VOR/DME station on the island on that lake? Looks like that what he orbiting. The DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) can keep him from accidentally straying into Finnish airspace. Still, for a military aircraft, isn’t that like flying with training wheels?

You’ll never see them being fueled with jet fuel.
Why? Fueloridation!
