If You Get A Misdelivered Package, UPS Will Give A Stranger Your Home Address
Forbes ^ | 4/25/2014 | Kashmir Hill

Last week, UPS dropped off a package on the porch of Jay Friedman’s home in Plano, Texas. But the delivery man had made a mistake. The medium-sized cardboard box that looked like it might contain a shirt was addressed to the right house number, but to a different (similar-sounding) street and a different zip code. Misdeliveries happen. No big deal. But two hours later, a stranger showed up at Friedman’s door. “He was like, ‘I’m here to get my package,” says Friedman, who later posted about the episode on Facebook and tweeted at UPS about it.

UPS spokesperson Dan Cardillo emphasized that the service delivers 15 million letters and packages daily and that misdeliveries are incredibly rare, but that when they do happen, the policy is to give out the address to which the package was misdelivered to a caller with the package’s tracking number. “We never suggest that a customer go to someone’s house and pick up the package,” emphasized Cardillo. “We reassure them that we will fix the misdelivery.”

In Friedman’s case, a UPS delivery person showed up to reclaim the package about an hour after the stranger had already taken it. “I told them the guy already came,” says Friedman. “UPS called again the next day to say they couldn’t find the package.”

Cardillo says the package did make its way to the intended recipient — who found it on his or her porch — but that no one knows who the stranger was that showed up at Friedman’s door. Which is… weird. But whoever it was would have had to call UPS with the package’s tracking number to have gotten Friedman’s address.

This sounds like a great way to discourage calling UPS if you receive a misdelivered package.

I had a strange thing happen a couple of weeks ago.

I ordered a video camera (a cheap one) and the company shipped it next day and sent me the USPS tracking number.

Two days later I checked the number and it showed the package delivered to Wisconsin. Since I live in Florida that surprised me. I went out to the mail box and there it was.

I guess they may have just switched two numbers and both packages got delivered the same day but not sure.

I’d do a “Return to Sender”,cross out my address, and drop it off at a UPS location.

I have UPS make my deliveries to the post office.

That's for packages you order. But if they misdelivered some psycho's package to your door, he still might show up.

...and people MAKE FUN of me when I say that I would like to see the ENTIRE GPS system be deleted.

How else does UPS know where they mis-delivered?

My mailbox has a number on it, and my street has signs with the street name on it. My town has signs giving away it's name too.

Anyone driving down the street can see what the address is to my house.

What about the dead drop type packages druggies send to a valid address that is not their own and then go to “collect” them?

He shouldn’t have given it to the stranger...

he should have said “if its yours ask the police for it..”

A few years ago I ordered a free range Bison roast which I was going to make for Christmas dinner. I was out of town when they delivered it by mistake to the phillipino family down the street who speak no English. Apparently they let it sit in their living room for 2 weeks so it was ruined.

I called UPS because after several weeks I had not received it. It took them forever to figure out where they delivered it but they finally called me triumphant and ready to deliver it. I said forget it as its ruined by now and I am getting a refund from the Bison company.

Long story short I left to go to my sister’s house for Christmas and had critter sitters watching the cats. When I got back I opened the freezer and there was a box with the bison roast in it. I called the critter sitter and she said she found the box on my porch and thought she better put it in the freezer. UPS had gone ahead and delivered it even though it was ruined. She also said it smelled funny. No kidding. So I took it out and threw it in the garbage. Our family still gets a laugh out of it every Christmas.

I once ordered a free Swarovski basball cap even though I could not even begin to buy one of their $2000.00 binoculars.

After a couple of weeks I phoned them and they sent me another one since I had never gotten the first. After a couple more weeks still no hat.

I somehow figured out where they had been delivered tho I can’t remember how I did now. It was a nearby neighbor. I walked up to their door and before I could even knock a young lady handed me two unopened boxes.

I never asked her why she didn’t give them to me as she clearly knew they were mine.

About a year ago I came home one evening to find a UPS package, a rather big and heavy box left in front of my apartment door. I hadn’t ordered anything but I took the box inside. The label had my address on it but the name of the person/company to whom it was to be delivered to definitely wasn’t me. The “from” label indicated it was from a bakery packaging supply company and the ”to” label was for a business. I tried to call UPS to tell them the package was delivered to the wrong address but to no avail. When I called the UPS 1-800 number, while there were options to enter if you were the shipper or the recipient, if you needed to track a delivery, there was no option for someone like me, getting the wrong package delivered to them. I even tried the hit the “zero” button to speak to a live person – it didn’t work, I just got caught up in an endless loop of endless number options, none of which got me to address a wrong delivery, live alone speak to a live person. I spent nearly a good hour tying to doing this. Next I went to the USP website and found the same thing. Then I tried to call the shipper but couldn’t get through to a live person nor was I even able to even leave a voicemail message with them. I for a moment thought of just tossing it in the dumpster, but in good conscience I just couldn’t do that.

So next I Googled the name and the company name on the ship to label and found out it was a local “boutique” bakery/cupcake/coffee shop. I found the email address of the owner on her company website and I emailed her to let her know I had her package.

The next morning I got an email back from her and she gave me her cell phone number and I called her. Long story short, we spoke and I learned that she had lived in the same apartment I was currently living in right before me. She told me she had a bakery/coffee shop and had placed a supply order with one of her vendors, the one who shipped the package to me but that she had given them her business location and updated her new bill to address (she had recently purchased a house) but obviously they didn’t update it as she had requested and mixed up her ship to address with her old bill to address. I told her I would be happy to personally drop off the box to her bakery shop on my way to work that morning or that I could leave it in front of my door for her to pick up at her convenience. She said that she didn’t want to put me out or trouble me further and told me to leave it in front of my door and that she would pick it up.

I came home from work that evening to find another box in front of my door.

This time it was a box full of beautiful and incredibly delicious cupcakes with a personal card from her thanking me for being so kind and thoughtful and honest. And she also included a coupon for half off an order of a dozen cupcakes.

I took the box of cupcakes to work the next morning to share with my co-workers and I’ve since ordered a few cakes and cupcakes from her.

When I didn’t receive an expected package, I contacted the sender who indicated that UPS had delivered it. I said that’s impossible, as I have video surveillance cameras and there was no delivery. A few days later a neighbor brought it to me, saying another neighbor up the block brought it to him. Don’t know why the first receiver didn’t directly give it to me, weird. If either of these two neighbors were dishonest I would never have gotten my expensive package. Thankfully they are honest. I recommend having video surveillance, as I saw a passerby take a delivered package from a neighbor’s house after viewing the video playback upon my neighbor’s request (he never did get it back).

See, and I thought this was going to end up as a ‘meet cute’ storybook romance.

And all you got were cupcakes.

Recently I found a small package (a book) on my front porch that wasn’t for me (I forget if it was UPS or USPS but probably was UPS). The intended recipient lives down the street—the delivery person was either dyslexic or careless (same numbers as my address but in a differen order). I just took it over to the other house and handed it to the lady who was supposed to get it.

I never asked her why she didn’t give them to me as she clearly knew they were mine.

"Oh these must be for yarddog. I'll just run them over... oh wait he is out and I don't want to leave them on the porch... he's back but it is after midnight I can't do it now. I'll do it in the morning.... I'm late for work! I'll do it after I get home....

And somehow the thing never gets done.
