Maher: GOP Shouts About Ukraine, But They ‘Never Quite Say What Obama Should Do’
mediaite.com ^ | April 26, 2014 |  Josh Feldman

Posted on 04/26/2014 11:48:04 AM PDT by Tailgunner Joe

In the Overtime segment of his show, Bill Maher clashed with Daily Beast editor-in-chief John Avlon over Ukraine. Maher said the U.S. should respond to Russia shutting down talks “by not giving a shit” and mockingly continued, “I’m sorry, let’s go have World War III over Crimea.”

Avlon argued that just because America has a “foreign war hangover” it doesn’t mean the U.S. doesn’t have to care about what Vladimir Putin is doing. He called Putin a bully that will only stop “when someone stands up to him.”

Maher asked, then, what exactly President Obama‘s supposed to do, calling out Republicans for criticizing Obama every which way on Ukraine but “they never say quite what Obama should do.” He said, “If you’re not suggesting we should go to war or send troops, what are you saying?”

Avlon pointed to U.S. troop exercises in Poland as a start, and lamented how the international community lacks the ability to coalesce around Putin and stop him from trying to “reassert the borders of the USSR.”

Hey, Maher, if Obama is so smart, why does he need to know anything from the GOP on what to do?

To me, it is plain that Putin is Obama’s boss.

That is why Obama keeps getting owned by Vlad, and the reason for the flexible” comment.

Republicans should say:
-
Our fighting in wars in other lands for the last hundred years is taking its toll on us as it did on Britain. Our forward policy should be commerce for all but war for none. In a world of Russia, China and Islam, another war would be existential for us. Advance our military distance and defense capability. An economically strong well armed America will deter the world from attacking us.
-
But the GOP won’t.

I agree with O’Reilly at times and the best sanction idea was made by him...restrict all travel AND persuade the major credit card companies to cut off all use there...

That would severely cripple their economy

The really scary thing... the guy will come to a decision.

If that doesn’t scare the living hell out of you, you’re probably toes up!

European and Asian banks also have credit cards and other countries have nice travel locations.

Sanctions are a joke.

We either do something effective about a military incursion or we don’t.

1. Nothing.

2. Arms sales and training for the former eastern bloc + Ukraine, to include the ABMs.

It’s really that simple.

Which do you think will lead to the best result?

Regardless of what Russia does, there are many things we must do at home first.

What does that even mean? No foreign policy until energy policy is fixed or something?

Whatever Obama could have done should have been done long ago, not in late response to Putin's aggression.

For starters, Obama could have attended his daily intelligence briefings, daily. Then he'd be more aware of the trends and not just the spot activities.

Obama should not have been destabilizing the American military by mass replacing the top leadership of all the branches. That leaves us currently disorganized and weakened.

Obama should not have dithered, waffled, and otherwise dragged his feet on many domestic issues such as the Keystone XL pipeline. It just gave the world the impression of him as an indecisive leader who can't separate short-term and long-term goals.

Obama should not have lied repeatedly and brazenly over Obamacare and everything else. It only sends the message to other world leaders that Obama does not negotiate in good faith, and his words cannot be trusted.

Hey Maher Republicans will just have to do the same thing that was done with Jimmy Carter! The Pubs will have to bring in another Ronald Reagan to clean up the mess! There is only ONE President - it sucks to be Ubama. He flunked lunch at Harvard and never had to manage a thing in his life. His legacy will be the number of golf matches he had while in the White House. It isn't up to the Republicans to say what they would do different. The truth of the matter is that Putin is having his way with Ubama. The USA got in this position because of the past actions of the Ubama admin. They suck at everything and the only thing that has them propped up is their propagandists in the media.

I am so glad I called my cable carrier years ago and told them to CANCEL HBO - I don't want to contribute a penny to Maher.

Hilarious - Obama makes a hash of foreign affairs and Maher attacks republicans.

Granted, theres not much Obama can do now.

Maher should have asked us five years ago what should've been done.

Of course, whisperings of better 'flexibility' after re-election probably wasn't such a good idea either.

Ukraine borders Russia. It is in Russia’s interest for Ukraine to be neutral or have a pro Russian government. Europe and US have been meddling in Ukrainian domestic politics to elect a government unfriendly to Russia. Putin is acting in Russia’s national interest.

The US has embargoed Cuba for decades and sponsored an invasion of Cuba in 1961 (Bay of Pigs). This was in the national interest of the US given that Cuba is located off the Florida coast. On multiple occasions the US has invaded countries in Central America and the Caribbean to cause or support regime change. Those invasions are the equivalent of what Putin is doing in Ukraine.

What the US should be doing is building a missile defense system and hardening the electric grid against an EMP attack. If we don’t, at some point in the not so distant future Iran or a client state of China or Russia is going to launch an EMP attack on the homeland.

As far as I can see, in the case of the Bundy ranch in Nevada, Ben Ficklin sides with Obama and the BLM. And anyone who supports the US military is attacked as a “McCain supporter” or a “neocon”. Look like Ben Ficklin desperately wants his SS check and just wants to support the current administration. Nothing else matters.

Actually all that you list is the plan, especially for someone with the power to “dxxn... America.” He’s just doing what he learned in church.

Well Ben has been here for a long time. I’m not here to say he’s wrong on everything, because I have not observed him to be wrong a lot over time. Right now we have some issues that are separating the men from the boys, but I believe we all screw up sometimes.

I don’t agree with the BLM. I don’t agree with open aggression over international borders in an area where there has not been open hostility towards anyone.

Dear Bill M.
The GOP isn’t suggesting anything because Obama would
NOT do any of what they would suggest. He has proven
this time after time.

Tomorrow:
8:00am Fire Biden
8:05am Fire Kerry
8:10am Resign
8:15am Have the moving van pull up to the White House.

There is nothing Obama can do now. He has undermined the military, promoted the impression of weakness, and made himself appear to be a buffoon any world leader can walk all over.
