The governor’s best-known initiative to make New York more business friendly, however, is only a smoke-and-mirrors corporate-welfare scheme. Start-Up NY, featured in television commercials starring Mr. Cuomo, aims to “revitalize” business opportunities upstate. The state and local governments will waive state and local taxes and offer handouts for hand-selected businesses that partner with a nearby college or university.
Start-Up NY eliminates taxes on favored businesses, sticking the unfavored with the bills. Therein lies the cause of New York’s uncompetitive position. Legislators in Albany are content to make tiny tax cuts and aid a few businesses at the expense of the others, without addressing the state’s fundamental problems of spending and regulating everything in sight.
Until Mr. Cuomo and his colleagues make the sweeping changes necessary to make business welcome, competing against Texas and other states offering low taxes and reasonable regulatory burdens, it won’t be a fair fight.

As long as “Don Cuomo JUNIOR”, wants to run every pro-kifer out of “his” state, and his “Lieutanant Capo DiBlasio” wants to take every gun from every New Yorker, upstate AND down, it would seem prime real estate for every crime-loving creep, who have their fangs dripping with the hunger of every unarmed American, at their combined mercy.
Who, with any sanity, would want to much less move there, let alone remian there? I moved out in 1994, and washed my hands of all of it.

Start-up New York unwittingly makes the conservative point. So what do you do as a businessman. Go to the state that has low taxes for ten years, or the state that has low taxes forever?

And everytime some newsidiot exclaims ‘poach’, I’d say, NO, CA and NY have been turning up the heat on their business startup frogs. They want out of the pot, and I’m offering the nice, cool pond of the Texas business climate.’
I wonder what the existing business owners think when they hear of newbs being able to move in and avoid taxes?

We left NY in 1982. Even as a young man, I could see no future there unless you became a state employee or were willing to give up all freedoms and lick the boots of the 1%ers who made more $$$ in politics than their thug grandfathers did in their criminal corporations. Stay, and enjoy the view from Titanic’s main deck...
Hopefully they’re thinking ‘Cuomo, Bloomberg and Blasio may go to hell, we are GTT (gone or going to Texas).
Between ND, WI, TX and a couple others, maybe the laws of economics will sink into the heads of those want to start businesses or get jobs with business but can’t in their state.

Excellent article. Had an argument with a liber from NY. He claims NY helps business, but I point out to him the same thing the WT article pointed out. They tax one industry to subsidize another industry. My liberal friend contends what is wrong with that, NY do not want old dirty industries but want clean future ones. My TKO is what happens if all those old dirty industries who are paying for the tax break leave. Who will pay for the subsidies??? Here is the other kicker, what happens when the high tech companies develop his product after ten years tax free, will he leave before the tax free period ends. In TX any business and anytime will have lower costs. IAW another liberal smoke and mirror scheme.
Their only contention is that the government has so much smarter people in it, that they make life cheaper and better for everyone else...
Nice theory. Like a lot of theories, it works only within certain boundaries. Governments have to enforce the rule of law, contracts, roads, maybe some utilities... As they get larger and more intrusive, they just start eating up resources and actually become detrimental to those who are producing value.
We have been there for a while. I suspect that even Texas could slim down government a good bit.
