Do No Evil Google - Censor & Snitch For The State
Zero Hedge ^ | 02/25/2014 | James Quinn

The key weapon in their arsenal of obedience is technology and the mega-corporations that control the flow of information disseminated to the hypnotized mindless masses. The United States has devolved into a society where a few powerful unelected unaccountable men, controlling the levers of government, education, finance, and media are able to formulate the opinions, tastes, beliefs, and fears of the masses through the effective and subtle use of technology. They have tenaciously and unflinchingly fashioned a technology addiction among the masses in order to keep them distracted, entertained and uninterested in thinking, gaining knowledge, or comprehending their roles and responsibilities as citizens in a purportedly democratic republic.

Would you be so kind as to post a link to a conservative alternative right here?

All this "free" content on the Internet comes with a price. The price is that we allow information about ourselves to be compiled so that advertising can be targeted at us. Most people can live with that and see it as a fair trade-off (the alternative of course is being charged for the content you read).

It's not a perfect system. Sometimes you get inappropriate ads targeted at you because you had the misfortune to click into a pornography site - or maybe your teenage son was surfing around without your knowledge. If you are a content provider and you aren't careful about how to manage your website, Google can accidentally identify you as a spammer or otherwise "gaming" their search engine. If so, they will ban you from the Adsense program and drive your content to the bottom of their search results until you can prove to them otherwise.

There's no big conspiracy here with respect to Google. They feed other websites billions of dollars a year (in advertising revenue) so that they can put content out on the web without having to charge for it. The Drudge Report is free because Matt Drudge makes millions a year on the unobtrusive banner ads you see on the top and right side of his webpage. Those ads are targeted for YOU by the way, based on your web activity. If you do a lot of shopping online for clothing, you are apt to get clothing ads when you visit Drudge or another other website that deploys advertisements. This is how most people on the web make their money.

While many here are not fans of Google because they feel they lean too far to the left, the fact is that they do make every attempt to "not do evil" and they are basically good people doing mostly good things.

Here is a pretty insightful article on one of the founders of Google - Larry Page. Upon reading it, you will learn that the Google founders are not necessary geniuses. They made a few mistakes along the way but they were in the right place at the right time to build an empire. Not an evil empire, though it might seem that way to those who don't take the time to research them.

First, I would like to see the FreeRepublic be able to host it's own image and video files. Storage costs are 'cheap' now, but I know that's quite a step up in bandwidth and baseline costs.

Otherwise, liveleak.com and vimeo.com are two.

No surprise. It’s been fascist-run for years.

You are obviously misinformed. Google is one of the only companies that ever pushed back on China, at the expense of their own business growth. On January 10, 2010, the two founders (Brin and Page) overrode CEO Schmidt and refused to participate with China’s repressive government in censoring search results for their citizens.

Probably no other company has the deep pockets and resources to not only record and retain every thing you post or view, your browser history (especially if it's the chrome browser), tracking cookie history, your email address, phone number(s), zip code, and probably your GEO coordinates if you're using a mobile device or newer laptop (What Google Knows About You) and cross reference the above in ways we can't even imagine.

Other video hosting sites just aren't in that class.

Google's purchase of Boston Dynamics, military application robotics, and a military grade drone company, Titan Aerospace, I would say introduces a major conflict of interest with the public. No surprise the Google corporate jets were being fueled with government subsidized jet fuel.

Doesn't help to know that The NSA Has Inserted Its Code Into Android OS, Or Three Quarters Of All Smartphones running Google's Android operating system. Then there's always those pesky wikileaks out there.

but hey, you do what you want.

You make it seem like Apple's iOS is perfectly safe and free of government snooping.

Nay, good man, Apple has the dubious reputation of secretly tracking user locations (Apple sued over location tracking in iOS - CNET).

I can appreciate Apple Inc's history, and admire Google as a driving market force, but I am weary of any entity collecting information to profile us including power company use of 'smart' meters. Benign now, but possibly politicized later.
