Poll: 20% of Israelis Feel More ‘Jewish’ Than ‘Israeli’

Over 20% of Israelis feel more “Jewish” than “Israeli,” a poll revealed Sunday, and the percentage rises among the younger and religious populations.

BINA, an organization for Jewish identity in Israel, released the poll ahead of Israeli Independence Day (Yom Ha’atzmaut). The organization polled 500 men and women from across the religious spectrum in Israel as a representative sample of public opinion, and aims to check the level of religious and national identity in Israel—both now, and for the future.

More religious Israeli identify primarily as “Jewish,” according to the poll. 49.5% of the Orthodox community feels more “Jewish” than “Israeli,” compared with 9.7% among the secular public. …

Oh my!!! Let me see if I have this straight... In the Jewish homeland, the place destined to the the home off displaced Jews from all over the world, the strictest adherents to the Jewish faith feel more "Jewish" than Israeli???

Well, who-da-thunk-it?!?!

I should also mention that the Jewish people have managed to retain their Jewish identity throughout their displacement from their homeland by clinging to their religion. Many know that the Jewish people could be displaced again.

You have Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Mizrachi, Falasha Mura (Ethiopian), et al who should feel Israeli and Jewish.

Shouldn’t they be synonymous?

20 per cent isn’t very high.

But it does bring a question to mind. What binds people together the most? Religion or patriotism?

I can see the answer to both ideologies.
