Noemi Álvarez Quillay took the first steps of the 6,500-mile journey to New York City from the southern highlands of Ecuador on Tuesday, Feb. 4, after darkness fell.
A bashful, studious girl, Noemi walked 10 minutes across dirt roads that cut through corn and potato fields, reaching the highway to Quito. She carried a small suitcase. Her grandfather Cipriano Quillay flagged down a bus and watched her board. She was 12.

So the moral of the story is it’s dangerous trying to sneak into other people’s countries? I kind of knew that already.
All the tear jerking pro-amnesty propaganda that’s fit to print.
These parents are out of their mind. No way would I sent a child of mine on a journey like that!
I have very little respect for parents that enter the US illegally and ask their 12 year old child to make a trek to the US all by herself, and enter illegally, to join them.
The child and what happened to her is heartbreaking. The parents should be deported.
“Noemi was part of a human flood tide that has swelled since 2011: The United States resettlement agency expects to care for nine times as many unaccompanied migrant children in 2014 as it did three years ago.”
Or as Stalin said, “The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of millions is a statistic”
A 12 year old child doing something most grown-ups would be terrified to even dream about. An amazing story with a tragic ending. If her parents came here legally non of this would have been necessary, a sad situation.
Rest in peace angel.
They’ve heard about DACA and are taking advantage of it.
We cannot be the safety valve for all of our southern, socialist neighbors - no free haven to illegals!
These parents are not the kind of people we want living in the US.
They sent a 12 year old on a 6500 mile trip...on foot?
You trust a 12 year old to a coyote to smuggle her into the country?
This is straight down child abuse.
They parents should he found, charged with child neglect, and then deported.
The parents, kid and grandfather obviously had enough to eat wherever they lived.
Bloomberg encouraging illegals to live in New York shares some of the blame. No enforcement of the parent’s employers or deportation.
I agree. It was moronic to tell a 12 year-old to make a trip like that by herself.
Obama is to blame for allowing those people to believe they can come into this country illegally with no consequences.
if an American parent sent their 12 year old child 1200 miles on their own, the state would take them away.
when the collapse comes these Marxists will all be arrested.
NYT Propaganda Pity Party
Her death can be laid at the feet of all those who have aided, abetted, agitated for and encouraged iillegal immigration. But hey, the Democrats need votes and the CoC members need cheap, pliant labor so what’s a little girl or two?
Why isn’t our media asking the obvious question?
Why is a very rich country like Mexico not providing jobs for its people?
Of course, the media could ask the same thing of America, but we know they won’t.
Noemis parents have said little publicly. Her mother, Martha V. Quillay, who works in a hair salon, spoke briefly with a reporter, then curtailed the conversation. Her father, José Segundo Álvarez Yupa, a construction worker, said it was too difficult to discuss. These are private matters, he said. This is a very painful thing. Its all over. We want to recover, we want to move on.
That’s too bad. Thank 0bama.
Is this going to be like the 8 year old heroin addict story?
By not enforcing our immigration laws, we are enabling tragedies of this sort. The fault here lies with Obama and the corrupt Homeland Security Department.
If I scanned the article correctly, this terrible tragedy occurred in Mexico.
The grandparents must have been off their rockers.
NYT Jason blair?
another fake anecdote story? they have been caught so many times faking anecdotes.
Or maybe we should keep illegals out and they can raise their own kids in the countries of their birth.
I don’t think the parents loved the child...
This story is hardly pro-amnesty. It's the prospect of amnesty that's giving their parents false encouragement and luring these poor children to their deaths from snakebite, and from being raped and beaten by the Mara-Salvatruchas and other human traffickers and narcotraficants who are the most brutal criminals in the Northern Hemisphere. "Amnesty" lures them to misery, disease, slow death by starvation / dehydration in the Sonoran desert, and suicide.
The amnesty-purveyors are responsible for this. Starting with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Except for this one.
Yet, for some reason people still want to come here.
True that. But this little girl wan not from Mexico; she was from Ecuador, which itself is 2500 miles from Mexico.
In fact International Living has articles about Americans living happily close to Quito. I blame the rats for enticing these people with "the roads are paved with gold" ideas. Although, as long as the rats and GOPe are in charge I guess this isn't completely wrong.
Also, I saw a NumbersUSA video a few years back and they clearly showed the folly in trying to import the world. It was fairly frightening.
The moral of the story is that if her parents had stayed in Ecuador instead of entering the USA illegally their daughter would still be alive.
I don’t think her parents loved her either. Kick the bums out for endangering the life of a child. AND MAKE THEM WALK.

I agree, it’s like saying “bummer.”
It’s too bad the girl died but that doesn’t mean we should do away with protecting our borders. Her parents should have taken better care of their daughter. She wouldn’t have been at the mercy of the scum that killed her. The dead girl didn’t make it to America but the piece of shit who murdered did.
Her parents should be charged with her death. Oh hell, what am I thinking??? It’s Bush’s fault!
... parents should he found, charged with child neglect, and then deported.
So sick of the pro-illegal junk the progressives are spewing.
Stay Home - Stay Alive
It is not bad if you have a US income. On the other hand if you are a national and protest the eco-nuts that are ruining the economy and taking away your job they throw you in jail for eight years.
“Why is a very rich country like Mexico not providing jobs for its people?
Of course, the media could ask the same thing of America, but we know they wont.”
I agree. Why is Mexico off the hook. Why is the USA the safety net for this country?
Why won’t the Mexicans allow their people to defend themselves from the drug lords?
I hear the Mexicans are brutal to people who slip across their border. This child was from Ecuador. Why would any loving parent send a child on such a dangerous journey? Did the parents travel together to the USA, yet expect a 12 year old to make it by herself? I would imagine they were sending money home to feed her. She was with her grandparents, so she would have been safe. This was selfish of the parents to make this child take this dangerous journey.
How long before we find out that “Naomi” is a composite character who never existed?
All four of my grandparents heard that, in America, the streets are paved with gold, and all four of them made their way here between 1904 and 1914. Had they not, they and their children would have perished in the Holocaust and I never would have been born.
Perverse incentives are part of it. As for Mexico, I’d have thought they’d be happy to help her on her way, but not to squat.
Different kind of “gold” now, unfortunately. Back then it was the dignified gold of wide open opportunities. Now it’s filthy welfare lucre.

The parents and grandparents should be ashamed.
God take care of that little girl-—she didn’t have a chance.
What about the grandmother? She sure isn't wanting for food.
