Cliven Bundy spouted off racist generalizations the other day as reported by a New York Times journalist, stereotyping blacks in negative fashion, with unhinged referencing to slavery and after that in an ad hoc talk generalizing about Mexican immigrants in positive condescension.
Does that outburst prove Bundys resistance to a bullying Bureau of Land Management is racially driven? Or that his cattlemans existence on the Western range is now tainted?
What are the general rules about assessing issues when the involved parties voice odious creeds?
The difference between a private life and a public career matters. If cowboy Cliven Bundy were organizing a formal resistance to the federal government by emphasizing racist doctrines, then he would be dangerous in the way Rev. Jeremiah Wright was scary in spouting racist diatribes to thousands in his congregation and on his CDs including to the future president of the United States.

Plain spoken, no BS, not PC in anyway, but not an ounce of hatred in them. They've worked hard their whole life and and don't need lectured on any "sensibility".
Mr Bundy is the kind of guy that would stop if you were stuck on the side of the road and do whatever was necessary to get you the help you needed. Even if he didn't like you.
There was a time when such men were considered the backbone of this country, now they're treated like rubes and racists.
I find the entire media, right to left, to be entirely despicable and incapable of an honest remark.
One would suspect, that Cliven Bundy subscribes to something called the “Code of the West”.
Though the Code of the West was always unwritten, here is a “loose” list of some of the guidelines:
1. Don’t inquire into a person’s past. Take the measure of a man for what he is today.
2. Never steal another man’s horse. A horse thief pays with his life.
3. Riding another man’s horse without his permission is nearly as bad as making love to his wife. Never even bother another man’s horse.
4. Defend yourself whenever necessary.
5. Look out for your own.
6. A cowboy is loyal to his “brand,” to his friends, and those he rides with.
7. Remove your guns before sitting at the dining table.
8. Don’t make a threat without expecting dire consequences.
9. Never pass anyone on the trail without saying “Howdy”.
10. When approaching someone from behind, give a loud greeting before you get within shooting range.
11. Don’t wave at a man on a horse, as it might spook the horse. A nod is the proper greeting.
12. After you pass someone on the trail, don’t look back at him. It implies you don’t trust him.
13. Never order anything weaker than whiskey.
14. Always fill your whiskey glass to the brim.
15. Always drink your whiskey with your gun hand, to show your friendly intentions.
16. Drinking on duty is grounds for instant dismissal and blacklisting.
17. A cowboy doesn’t talk much; he saves his breath for breathing.
18. No matter how weary and hungry you are after a long day in the saddle, always tend to your horse’s needs before your own, and get your horse some feed before you eat.
19. Cuss all you want, but only around men, horses and cows.
20. Complain about the cooking and you become the cook.
21. Do not practice ingratitude.
22. A cowboy is pleasant even when out of sorts. Complaining is what quitters do, and cowboys hate quitters.
23. Always be courageous. Cowards aren’t tolerated in any outfit worth its salt.
24. A cowboy always helps someone in need, even a stranger or an enemy.
25. Never try on another man’s hat.
26. Be hospitable to strangers. Anyone who wanders in, including an enemy, is welcome at the dinner table. The same was true for riders who joined cowboys on the range.
27. Never wake another man by shaking or touching him, as he might wake suddenly and shoot you.
28. Real cowboys are modest. A braggart who is “all gurgle and no guts” is not tolerated.
29. Be there for a friend when he needs you.
30. Give your enemy a fighting chance.
31. Never shoot an unarmed or unforewarned enemy. This was also known as “the rattlesnake code”: always warn before you strike. However, if a man was being stalked, this could be ignored.
32. Never shoot a woman no matter what.
33. Consideration for others is central to the code, such as: Don’t stir up dust around the chuckwagon, don’t wake up the wrong man for herd duty, etc.
34. Respect the land and the environment by not smoking in hazardous fire areas, disfiguring rocks, trees, or other natural areas.
35. Honesty is absolute - your word is your bond, a handshake is more binding than a contract.
36. Live by the Golden Rule.
Thank you!
It’s what I’ve been saying since this whole stupid thing erupted. Journalists seem to know nothing about working class men and their lives. They are plain-spoken, often profane, and usually politically-incorrect. But when a hurricane or tornedo hits, they are the first on the scene, risking life and limb to save people - black, white and indifferent. They are the heart’s blood of this country. Journalists of all political stripes need to back off on this. Now!
Everything I needed to know about how to conduct myself I learned from watching Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, Gene Autrey etc. There are times when one needs to understand when to talk and when to shut the heck up. Sometimes I fail at that one. :>}
A surprising display of cowardice from VDH.
I wonder how much of this dust up is to take attention away form the missing nukes and possible plan for an EMP attack against America?
Kinda surprised me too. Seems too many are still looking at the words he used and not the truth they told.
Faraday cage? (SP?)
It must be said that Bundy’s clownish remarks have been vastly outclowned by his detractors and our “elite” in general.
I have old equipment that can survive an EMP. Fuel would be a hassle but there would be no where to go anyway.
Yup. All the lsm and most of the conservatives comment-taters missed the whole point and ran like scared wabbits. Using the wrong words to get your thoughts out can get you in trouble. Must-be-quiet.
Man, I’m hoping McDonalds has a contingency plan. LOL!
I’m usually a big Victor Davis Hanson fan, but this column is way off, not so much as it relates to Cliven Bundy, but as it relates to Donald Sterling. On that point, he has swung mightily at the pitch in the dirt that is thrown time and again and represents the greatest danger.
Sterling—of whom I know nothing other than he probably grew up in the 40s when attitudes were different—appears (the voices on the recording have not been confirmed, but in keeping with the rush to judgment, let’ assume it is him)—made remarks to his ex-girlfirend (who was certainly baiting him with a hidden recorder) IN HIS OWN HOME. These remarks were allegedly made in the course of a heated argument.
Can you imagine if your worst moment was caught on tape—a private conversation where you said things that you would NEVER say in a public forum? Who among us has not had such a moment?
I’m not defending Sterling or his views. I’m defending his right to hold them and voice them in private (versus the crazed Tweeting). I’d love to have private tape recording of conversations from the outraged Magic Johnson, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, the truly craven Al Sharpton and ANY other stone thrower. This game of manufactured “gotcha” will continue as long as we suffer a culture defined by political correctness and universal offense. As unsavory of a character as Sterling may (or may not) be, it will not stop with him, just as it will not stop with the Mozilla CEO. You may be next.
VDH misses the mark here almost completely.
What journalists? Do we really have any or are most of them just trained liberal jackasses to get everything wrong. America is finished. And some are on Fox.
Words to live by.
Think hard about all the people who came to Bundy’s ranch to help him. Many are still there & if anything else starts up, more will arrive.
How come the BLM came to the site with a very large backhoe?
Because they KNEW they were going to KILL Bundy’s cows.
Now, without knowing exactly what Bundy said and basing this strictly on the media's focus on the word usage of "negro", I have to say I am more astonished that Joe Biden"s comment (and the pass given by the MSM and "black leaders") when he referred to candidate Obama as "clean and articulate" as if Barak was the exception to the rule.
If anyone has Bundy's exact quote, please post it to my attention. PS: thanks in advance.
Careful there. I’ll be 67 in June so you “know” how I came up. LOL! :>} I’ve seen a lot. From negro to colored to black to africanAmerican to.................... In the early 70’s I saw stenciled frosted glass in doors at a doctors office stating “Coloreds only” and drinking fountains the same way. Old timey doctor’s office in Meridian MS. Did the care they got differ from white folks? Uh, nope.
Negro is still a valid word, else the United Negro College Fund would change its name.
